In a development that has sent ripples of excitement through the Delhi Capitals (DC) camp, veteran Australian speedster Mitchell Starc has officially received the green light from Cricket Australia (CA) to participate in the ongoing IPL 2026. After a grueling recovery period spanning nearly three months, the 36-year-old left-arm quick is set to fly to India this Friday, April 24, marking a pivotal turning point for the Capitals’ bowling dynamics.

Game-changer alert! Mitchell Starc set to light up IPL 2026

Starc’s absence was a direct consequence of the heavy workload he endured during the 2025-26 Ashes series, where his masterclass performance earned him the Player of the Series award in Australia‘s 4-1 triumph. However, the physical toll manifested during a Big Bash League (BBL) encounter for the Sydney Sixers against the Perth Scorchers on January 25, where a diving catch resulted in significant shoulder and elbow injuries. After a period of rehabilitation and a successful week of pain-free bowling in Sydney, the spearhead is ready to lead the DC attack, likely making his debut against the Rajasthan Royals on May 1 in Jaipur.

The timing of Starc’s return could not be more critical for the Delhi Capitals. While the franchise started the season with back-to-back victories, their momentum has recently stuttered, losing three of their last four matches. In Starc’s absence, South African pacer Lungi Ngidi has shouldered the burden effectively, claiming 7 wickets in 6 games. However, the inclusion of a world-class left-arm threat provides the tactical variety and death-bowling precision that DC has lacked during high-pressure chases.

Cricket Australia’s decision to clear Starc also reflects a broader satisfaction with their pace battery’s fitness. With Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood also returning to action, CA is managing its assets carefully ahead of a massive schedule of 20 Tests preceding the next ODI World Cup. For DC, integrating Starc into a unit that already features Mukesh Kumar, T Natarajan, and the spin duo of Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav transforms them into one of the most formidable bowling lineups in the tournament.

Starc breaks silence on injury speculation and commitment

The road to recovery was not without its off-field distractions. Starc recently took to social media to address misinformed reports that questioned his loyalty to the franchise and suggested he was prioritizing international duties over his IPL contract. The pacer was blunt in his assessment of the narrative, emphasizing that his delay was purely medical.

In a candid statement on his Instagram story, Starc clarified the situation:

“Despite the opinions and views of certain individuals with their platforms in and through the Indian media, I’m currently rehabbing and managing an injury in my shoulder and elbow, the extent of which I didn’t know during the Australian summer. These individuals have made some strong statements around involvement in the IPL and provided heavily misinformed opinions of players, preached them as facts, and claimed to know my body better than me.”

He further expressed his dedication to the Delhi fans and management, stating:

“With that said, I do acknowledge this injury setback and that the timing is disruptive to the Delhi team, and I apologise for that and to the fans for not being available for the early part of this season. I remain committed to joining DC, am in continual communication with the team, and will continue to do what I can to be available for DC as soon as possible.”

With the medical clearance now secured, the focus shifts from the treatment table to the pitch. Starc’s arrival is expected to provide the emotional and technical boost necessary for the Delhi Capitals to secure a playoff spot in what is shaping up to be a highly competitive IPL 2026 season.
