The debate over club vs. country has taken a fascinating turn in 2026 as England’s rising sensation, Jacob Bethell, finds himself at the centre of a philosophical tug-of-war. After being a part of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) squad that secured a historic maiden title last year, the 22-year-old all-rounder is currently navigating a season of patient observation.

While Bethell sharpens his skills in the high-octane environment of the Indian Premier League, legendary former England captain Sir Alastair Cook has sparked a massive conversation regarding the youngster’s development, suggesting that the bench in India is no place for a future Test star.

Alastair Cook advises Jacob Bethell to quit RCB mid-IPL

The crux of the controversy stems from Cook’s firm belief that Bethell is currently “sitting on his a***” when he should be out in the middle scoring runs. Speaking on the Stick to Cricket podcast, Cook expressed concerns that England’s next generation is sacrificing vital red-ball development for the allure of the franchise circuit.

Cook pointed toward Bethell’s heroics in Sydney as proof of his ceiling, arguing that the youngster has the temperament to be a mainstay in the England top order. “For that top order batting, the way he played at Sydney, against that attack, in those conditions… I’ve looked at a player there, and I’m certain this bloke can open. If he can bat three, he can open,” Cook remarked.

However, the former opener questioned the utility of Bethell’s current stint with RCB, where he faces stiff competition from overseas stars like Phil Salt, Tim David, Romario Shepherd, and Josh Hazlewood.

“It’s not ideal, is it? Bethell shouldn’t really be it because he’s not opening. He’s sitting at the IPL not doing anything. Ideally, he could come back and open for Warwickshire to help England,” Cook added, emphasizing that four rounds of the County Championship would provide better preparation for the international summer.

Bethell reacts to Alastair Cook’s suggestion to prioritize county cricket

Responding to the critique, Bethell offered a sophisticated defense of his stay in India. The southpaw insisted there is “no right or wrong way” to develop as a modern cricketer, citing his personal growth within the RCB camp as evidence.

“I don’t think there’s a right or wrong way to do it. I think we’ve seen last year, for me personally, that by not playing cricket for a little while, I came into the end of that India series a bit undercooked. But actually, if you look at where I was last year after coming back from the IPL, I was flying… I feel better now than I was a month ago after the World Cup,” Bethell admitted.

Bethell argued that the sheer intensity of the IPL, even during training, surpasses the pressure of domestic matches. With RCB currently sitting 4th in the standings and looking to defend their crown, the environment is one of constant scrutiny.

“You’ve got hundreds of eyes on you… the people in the crowd with the phones on. I think you get exposed to a lot of stuff. You might not get the amount of time in the middle as [you do] in County Championship… but the ability to actually just continue doing what you want to do when there are loads of eyes on you is really important,” he added.

Bethell concluded by confirming his commitment to the defending champions: “I firmly believe that this is the thing for me to be doing right now.” As RCB approaches the business end of the season, the young Englishman remains ready to swap the bench for the crease the moment the opportunity arises.
