Former England captains Kevin Pietersen and Alastair Cook have found themselves in another public disagreement, this time over young batter Jacob Bethell and his decision to continue with Royal Challengers Bengaluru in IPL 2026. While Cook believes Bethell should have returned to county cricket for regular match practice, Pietersen strongly defended the youngster’s decision to stay in India and learn within the IPL environment.

The debate gained attention after Cook questioned the value of Bethell remaining in the tournament despite not getting regular chances in the playing XI. Pietersen, however, insisted that simply being around world-class players in a competition like the IPL can be a huge advantage for a young cricketer’s development.

Alastair Cook questions lack of game time of Jacob Bethell

Speaking on the Stick to Cricket podcast, Cook expressed concern that Bethell was spending too much time on the bench and missing valuable opportunities to play competitive cricket back home in England.

According to Cook, regular county matches would benefit the youngster far more than sitting out games in the IPL. He bluntly stated that Bethell should be “back playing county cricket” rather than remaining in India without getting meaningful game time.

“He should be back playing county cricket rather than sitting on his a*** at the IPL not doing anything,” said Cook.

Cook’s comments reflected a traditional view that match exposure is the best way for a young player to improve, especially during an important stage of development.

Kevin Pietersen delivers strong response to Cook

Pietersen was quick to respond and did not hold back while defending Bethell’s choice. Posting on X, the former England star argued that Cook could not fully understand the value of being inside the IPL setup because he had never experienced it himself.

Pietersen stressed that training alongside some of the best players in world cricket, sharing dressing rooms with elite performers, and understanding the pressure of the league offers lessons that cannot be gained elsewhere.

He strongly advised Bethell to remain in India, saying the experience alone would make him a better player in the long run. Pietersen’s passionate response once again showed his long-standing support for franchise cricket and the IPL’s role in player development.

“Alastair Cook has absolutely NO IDEA what it’s like to be in the IPL. What it’s like to always be around the best players in the world. So his opinion on Jacob Bethell doesn’t matter at all. Stay in India, Jacob. I know, even though you’re not playing, you’re learning and will be a way better player,” Pietersen wrote on X.

    Bethell backs his own decision

Bethell himself has also spoken positively about staying with RCB despite limited opportunities. In a recent chat on the Sky Cricket podcast, the young England batter explained that simply being part of the tournament had already improved his game. He said he felt like a better player compared to a month earlier because of the standard of cricket around him and the chance to spend time with top international players. Bethell described the IPL as a unique experience that many people cannot fully understand until they are part of it.

He also added that the quality of the tournament naturally pushes players to raise their standards, even subconsciously, because of the intensity and calibre of competition.

“I feel better now than I was a month ago after the World Cup, through just getting time around the guys over here and the pure standard of cricket in India and the IPL. It’s something that not many people will understand how cool it is until actually being around a team or the tournament itself when you’re here. It just has a completely different feel. It feels like everyone almost ups their game subconsciously without even really knowing because of the calibre of the tournament,” said Bethell.

First appearance finally arrives for English youngster

Despite strong competition in the RCB squad, Bethell finally got his first opportunity of IPL 2026 during the clash against Gujarat Titans in Match 34 of the season. The left-handed batter scored 14 runs from 10 balls before being dismissed by Mohammed Siraj. Although his stay was brief, it marked an important step in his IPL journey.

RCB went on to win the contest by five wickets, and Bethell’s appearance added another layer to the ongoing debate over whether patience in the IPL can be more valuable than immediate game time elsewhere.
