Production of the fourth season of HBO’s The White Lotus is now underway in the French Riviera, but the popular murder mystery series has just lost one of its lead actors.
Helena Bonham Carter will no longer be starring in the upcoming installment, exiting the series just over a week into production, per Deadline. An HBO spokesperson says it soon had “become apparent that the character which Mike White created for Helena Bonham Carter did not align once on set.”
Now, the spokesperson says the role has “been rethought” and will be rewritten and recast in the next few weeks.
The statement also says that the team is “saddened that they won’t get to work with her, but remain ardent fans and very much hope to work with the legendary actress on another project soon.” According to Deadline, Carter was at the top of the producers’ wish list as well as the first actor pursued for the fourth season of The White Lotus.
The rest of the announced cast for the upcoming season includes Steve Coogan, Caleb Jonte Edwards, Vincent Cassel, Dylan Ennis, Alexander Ludwig, Chris Messina, Marissa Long, AJ Michalka, Kumail Nanjiani, Corentin Fila, Ari Graynor, and Nadia Tereszkiewicz.
Additional cast includes Heather Graham, Chloe Bennet, Sandra Bernhard, Rosie Perez, Max Greenfield, Frida Gustavsson, Jarrad Paul, Ben Schnetzer, Charlie Hall, and Laura Smet.
The White Lotus is written and directed by series creator Mike White and executive produced by White, David Bernad, and Mark Kamine.
HBO recently announced at the start of production that the new season will be set during the Cannes Film Festival, which will take place nearby during filming.
