Defending champions Paris St-Germain and Bayern Munich shared nine goals in an absolute classic of a Champions League semi-final first leg.
Bayern looked out of the game – and possibly the tie – when they trailed 5-2 before the hour mark on an incredible, electric evening.
But goals from Dayot Upamecano and Luis Diaz dragged the German giants back from the dead and set up next week’s return leg as an absolute must-see.
Both sides moved past 40 goals in the Champions League this season on a night of stunning firepower. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Ousmane Dembele both scored twice for the hosts while Harry Kane – of course – opened the scoring.
Vincent Kompany was watching from the stands and must have feared the worst at one point but now will fancy his chances in the return leg in Munich.
Arsenal or Atletico Madrid await in the final in Budapest and will go some to challenge whoever wins this tie.
Bayern were on top from the off and were handed a 17th-minute penalty when former Liverpool man Diaz was tripped.
Kane stepped up and casually finished past Matvey Safonov – incredibly Bayern’s 168th goal of the season. Kane set a new record as the first Englishman to score in six consecutive Champions League appearances in the process.
Moments later Kane sent Michael Olise in on goal but he could not beat the Russian goalkeeper.
PSG then burst into life and while Dembele should have scored when clean through, Kvaratskhelia made no mistake to bury a low equaliser in the 24th minute.
João Neves then powered a header home to give the Parisians their first lead of the night, before Aleksandar Pavlović found Olise in space, and the former Crystal Palace winger unleashed a superb strike from distance that levelled the scores at 2-2.
Dembele then buried a penalty given by VAR for handball and PSG led at the break.
Keeping up? PSG seemed to have it won with two goals in three minutes from Kvaratskhelia and Dembele but Bayern rallied to recover and arguably even end the night the stronger of the two sides.
There had never been more than seven goals scored in a Uefa Champions League semi-final before, while this is the first time Bayern have conceded five goals in a European match since the 1994-95 Champions League semi-final second leg against Ajax (2-5).
They meet again in Munich next Wednesday. Do not miss it.
