Independent distributor Neon has acquired North American rights to Ally, the first animated feature from Oscar-winning director Bong Joon Ho, marking a reunion following their collaboration on Parasite.
The project represents a significant new direction for Bong, who has built his reputation on live-action films but has long expressed an interest in animation. Ally has reportedly been in development for several years and is now set for a 2027 release, with Neon handling distribution in North America.
Details about the film’s story remain largely under wraps, though it is understood to centre on the relationship between humans and deep-sea life, continuing Bong’s tendency to explore environmental and social themes through genre storytelling. The film is also expected to blend the director’s signature tonal shifts with a more family-oriented animated style, broadening his reach while maintaining his distinct voice.
The acquisition further strengthens Neon’s ongoing relationship with the filmmaker, having previously backed Parasite, which went on to become a historic awards success. Their continued collaboration suggests confidence in Ally as a major release for the coming years, particularly as the studio expands its footprint in animation.
While Bong’s move into animation may come as a surprise to some, it aligns with a wider trend of established auteurs experimenting with the medium. With Ally, anticipation is already building around how the director’s meticulous visual style and sharp social commentary will translate into animation, setting the stage for one of the more intriguing projects currently on the horizon.
