Gujarat Titans produced a dominant all-round performance to defeat Royal Challengers Bengaluru by four wickets in Match 42 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Chasing a modest target of 156, GT rode on explosive knocks from Shubman Gill and Jos Buttler to seal the game comfortably with 25 balls to spare.
RCB stumble after promising start
After being put in to bat, RCB began aggressively with Virat Kohli leading the charge. Kohli smashed 28 off just 13 balls, peppering the boundaries with his trademark fluency. However, his early dismissal triggered a collapse that RCB never truly recovered from. Devdutt Padikkal anchored the innings with a well-compiled 40 off 24 balls, while Rajat Patidar added 19. But frequent wickets in the middle overs dented their momentum. Contributions from Romario Shepherd (17) and Bhuvneshwar Kumar (15) helped RCB reach 155, but the total felt below par on a good batting surface.
GT’s bowling unit kept things tight after the powerplay. Arshad Khan was the standout performer, picking up three crucial wickets, while Rashid Khan and Jason Holder chipped in with two wickets each to derail RCB’s innings.
Explosive start sets the tone for GT
Chasing 156, Gujarat Titans came out with clear intent. Gill played a captain’s knock, hammering 43 off just 18 balls, showcasing elegant strokeplay and aggressive intent. He found an able partner in Jos Buttler, who blasted 39 off 19 balls, including four towering sixes.
The duo’s attacking approach dismantled the RCB bowling attack early, effectively putting the game out of reach within the powerplay itself. Even though wickets fell in the middle phase, the required run rate never climbed out of control.
Rahul Tewatia finishes in style despite late hiccups
RCB did attempt a comeback through Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who claimed three wickets, and Romario Shepherd, who picked up two. However, the damage had already been done. Rahul Tewatia ensured there were no further surprises, scoring a composed 27 off 17 balls to guide GT home. Gujarat Titans eventually reached 158/6 in just 15.5 overs, sealing a convincing win.
