Video streaming giant YouTube is making picture-in-picture (PiP) mode free for all users worldwide, after previously offering it to free users exclusively in the U.S.
However, YouTube isn’t granting full access to the feature. Free users will only be able to use PiP with select content; long-form, non-music content specifically.
Now, as many will point out, PiP has been available globally for a long time, but it was limited to YouTube Premium and Premium Lite users only — a service which I have reaped the benefits of for a few years now.
And while PiP is now available for free users, Premium users won’t see changes to their access. Premium Lite subscribers can continue using PiP as before, also with long-form, non-music content. Premium Members, on the other hand, can use PiP with music content.
The feature is rolling out now and will be available to all users on Android and iOS worldwide in the coming months. At the time of writing, PiP wasn’t available when we tested it in Canada.
