Crystal Palace took a major step towards a first European final with a 3-1 win over Shakhtar Donetsk in the first leg of their Conference League semi-final.

The visitors struck inside 21 seconds through Ismaila Sarr and, despite conceding early in the second half, responded with two more goals.

Strikes from Daichi Kamada and Jorgen Strand Larsen ensured Oliver Glasner’s side take a two-goal cushion back to Selhurst Park.

    Lightning start sets the tone

Palace could not have asked for a better opening. Within half a minute, Jean-Philippe Mateta slipped a precise through ball into Sarr, who finished low into the corner.

That early breakthrough handed Palace immediate control of the tie’s rhythm. Shakhtar saw plenty of the ball thereafter, at times exceeding 70% possession, but struggled to turn that dominance into meaningful chances.

The hosts threatened sporadically, with Eguinaldo lively and probing, yet clear opportunities were limited.

Shakhtar respond but Kamada restores advantage

The second half began in stark contrast to the first. Shakhtar equalised within two minutes of the restart when Oleg Ocheretko converted from close range after a flick-on from Kaua Elias.

Momentum briefly swung in the hosts’ favour, and they pushed forward with greater urgency. Palace, however, responded eventually.

Just past the hour mark, a long throw caused chaos in the penalty area, and Kamada reacted quickest to drill a low effort through bodies and into the net, restoring the visitors’ lead at 2-1.

    Late break seals commanding lead

As Shakhtar chased an equaliser, spaces opened up – and Palace exploited them.

With six minutes remaining, Kamada turned provider, threading a perfectly weighted pass into the path of Strand Larsen. The striker showed composure to evade his marker and delicately lift his finish into the corner, effectively sealing the result.

The second leg at Selhurst Park now heavily favours Palace, who carry both momentum and a two-goal advantage.

Before that, they return to Premier League action against Bournemouth, while Shakhtar face Dynamo Kyiv domestically.
