Filming kicked off on 23 April in Paris and is now continuing for approximately 6 weeks in Rome on Iside, the new film directed by Maria Sole Tognazzi. Penned by Furio Andreotti, Enrico Audenino, Giulia Calenda and Maria Sole Tognazzi, the film is, in the director’s words, “a magical and personal story born out of a deep-seated need and written for the four wonderful actresses who star in it”.
The cast is, in fact, led by Monica Bellucci, who was awarded a Lifetime Achievement David di Donatello trophy in 2021 and who’s back working with Tognazzi following the 2008 movie, The Man Who Loves; Jasmine Trinca, who’s the proud owner of two David di Donatello awards and fresh from the sets of Gioia and The Eyes of Others; Romana Maggiora Vergano, who made herself known to critics and audiences alike via The Time It Takes in 2024 in Venice, where she bagged the Francesco Pasinetti Prize for Best Actress, and another newly discovered young gem of Italian cinema, Tecla Insolia, who scooped the David and Nastro d’Argento trophies for Best Actress thanks to The Art of Joy. They’re joined by Sergio Romano, Anna Bellato and Jean-Édouard Bodziak.
Iside follows Veronica, a former dancer with magnetic energy who has found a safe haven in the Castelli Romani region: she has a dance school, a light and airy home, and a unique bond with her daughter, Chiara. When they learn they’re expecting a child, they grow even closer, but the day comes when their magical sense of harmony shatters in the most painful way possible. Years later, in Paris, a young Italian dancer with an ineffable talent and preoccupied eyes, called Thalia, crosses paths with Chiara who’s now an adult. They don’t know one another, but they feel a profound connection. The lives of these three women, who are far apart in age, seem to call to one another from a distance, bound together by a thread which speaks to motherhood and the mysterious echo through which love continues to flow
As enthused by Cattleya’s founder and president Riccardo Tozzi – who’s producing the film with Massimo Di Rocco and Luigi Napoleone of Bartlebyfilm and with Martino Benvenuti and Maria Castellitto of Bride Films, in league with Rai Cinema – “We’re really attached to this project, a light-hearted yet profound film about the mother-daughter relationship, involving a director who’s so close to us and a formidable cast”.
Maria Sole Tognazzi recently wrapped filming on the first season of the TV series In Utero, which will drop on HBO Max on 8 May, following the success of the Sky series, Petra, starring Paola Cortellesi in the lead role. Tognazzi made her debut in 2003 with Passato prossimo, winning the Nastro d’Argento for Best Emerging Director and the Italian Golden Globe for Best First Film, before directing L’uomo che ama, A Five Star Life and Me, Myself and Her, the latter two titles respectively scooping a Nastro d’Argento for Best Comedy, and two Nastro d’Argento trophies for Best Comedy and Best Subject. Her most recent box office release dates back to 2024, in the form of Dieci minuti. Her sixth feature film, Iside, will be released in Italian cinemas by 01 Distribution.
