Brooke Nevils Recently Sat Down For An Interview With CNN
Nevils is a former NBC employee who has alleged that former Today co-anchor Matt Lauer sexually assaulted her. She had claimed that this took place while the two were covering the 2014 Winter Olympics for NBC in Sochi.
Nevils recently recounted the story in her new book, Unspeakable Things: Silence, Shame, and the Stories We Choose to Believe. For his part, Lauer has denied the allegations, claiming that sexual encounters were consensual, and has not been charged with criminal wrongdoing. He was ultimately fired from Today in November 2017.
Recently, Nevils sat down for her first television interview. Speaking with CNN, she explained why she needed time to come forward with her story.
Nevils shared, “We have this trope that victims claim rape to avoid accountability. But in order to come forward with an allegation, you are essentially taking accountability for every mistake you’ve ever made in your life, and you’re putting a target on your back.”
Nevils felt that, understanding the network’s hierarchy, she wasn’t in a place to even process what had happened. She shared, “In my situation, I knew what would happen if… You know, Matt Lauer, at that point at NBC, could literally do no wrong. So it was unthinkable to imagine that it could be anything other than a misunderstanding, and it took me years.”
Nevils Shared That There Are Conversations That She Hopes Her Book Will Spark
In addition, Nevils noted that she grew up watching Lauer on the show, noting that he was the face of Today. She continued, “He was old enough to be my father. My brain almost just could not compute the idea that he could do anything wrong.”
Nevils shared that there were times when she felt she put herself in an awkward position. Ultimately, she shared that it took her “years” to realize otherwise.
Towards the end of the interview, Nevils called on people to think about the positions we put people in. She also wanted to start conversations about power and consent. Towards the end, she felt, “And that’s why I wrote the book. We just have to do better.”
