Kobbie Mainoo scored a stunning winner on his return from the sidelines as Manchester United sealed Champions League qualification with a 3-2 win over Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Matheus Cunha opened the scoring in the sixth minute, his left-footed effort deflecting in off Alexis Mac Allister, before Benjamin Sesko doubled the lead in the 14th minute.

Liverpool responded after the break through Dominik Szoboszlai on 47 minutes and Cody Gakpo on 56 minutes to level the contest, before Mainoo settled it in the 77th minute, finishing calmly into the bottom corner after a Luke Shaw cross was headed down by Amad Diallo.

It confirmed a top-four finish for United with three games to spare, marking a remarkable transformation under Michael Carrick since he replaced Ruben Amorim in January.

Mainoo: ‘I used to dream of times like these’

For Mainoo, returning from a spell out of the first team, the moment of scoring at Old Trafford carried a deeply personal weight.

“Happy to turn it around, it’s a credit to all our players and the manager as well. We still need to finish the season strong, this is not enough for us.”

On his goal in front of the Stretford End, the academy graduate was overcome with emotion.

“I saw a couple of my family members, it’s a blessing to play and a blessing to score. I used to sit in that corner, I’m just so blessed to be in this position. I used to dream of times like these. I’m glad to be here with the club.”

He also spoke warmly about his manager’s role in his revival. “He’s played a huge part in it, all the confidence he gives all the players. You want to follow him and fight for him and die for him on the pitch.”

    Carrick keeps the focus forward

Michael Carrick acknowledged the significance of the result without allowing his side to get carried away, a tone that has defined his management since taking charge.

“Qualifying for the Champions League felt off in the distance at one point, it’s not something we celebrate really, we just want to finish high up in the league.”

Carrick credited the collective spirit that has driven United’s second-half surge, and was particularly pleased with the way his side responded to being pegged back.

“We scored a lot of goals, we have scored in the past five games. Our focus has been out of possession work. We try to put our strength in the game, we started the game well, I’m just as pleased with the way we finished the game – two setbacks could have knocked us but the players were quality, and we came out on top.”

On what has changed under his tenure, Carrick added: “Good players and good staff definitely help. The connection we have as a group, overcoming change and difficult challenges. We’re just trying to do the right things and players have taken everything on so well, we want to finish the season strong.”

On what the future holds for himself and the club, Carrick was measured. “It’s not about what I like or not like, it’s not in my control, everything has gone so well. We know the situation and we still want to get better and see what happens next.”
