Kaitlynn Carter brought home a six-month-old rescue Rottweiler named Rodeo this week, and the story behind it is one of those warm, happy accidents worth reading start to finish.

The lifestyle content creator shared the full account on Instagram, starting with a cheerful confession. It all began during “a very chaotic parenting era,” she wrote. Home renovations were still in progress. The kids were keeping her and partner Kris plenty busy. And yet, she found herself wanting a puppy.

Part of the reason was practical. Her dog Dash had been getting less one-on-one time. A new companion for him felt right. But there was something more personal involved too. Kaitlynn had owned Rottweilers before and adored the breed. “In my book they were perfect dogs and I had been really missing them,” she wrote.

Kris, though, wasn’t quite ready to take on more. So Kaitlynn quietly reached out to Love at First Mutt, a rescue organization she considers close friends, and asked them to keep watch for a Rottweiler puppy in need of a home. The thinking was measured: finding a young, healthy purebred with the right temperament for small kids would probably take a while. That time would give Kris a chance to warm up to the idea.

Two weeks later, Love at First Mutt called. They’d found him.

Rodeo had been discovered abandoned along a river bed in Lytle Creek. He was estimated to be about six months old. He was also sick. A respiratory infection put him on a 10-day medical hold at the shelter. No visits were allowed. No outside vet. Just daily phone calls from Kaitlynn, checking in on his condition each morning.

Things got a little more complicated from there. The hold would eventually expire, and the shelter would then run a lottery. Multiple families had expressed interest in Rodeo. To improve her chances, Kaitlynn quietly asked a friend to enter the lottery separately, adding a second name to the pool.

With two days left on the hold, she finally told Kris everything.

His response was the last thing she expected. She shared his exact words in the Instagram post: “I’ll call and enter my name in the lottery too because I was planning to get you a puppy for your birthday anyway.”

He had been planning the same surprise. Two people in the same household, quietly working toward the same dog. Without a word to each other. It’s the kind of thing that feels almost too sweet to be true.

Now they had four names in the lottery. On the morning of the draw, Kaitlynn had been told to expect a call after 9am. She had a quiet hunch it might come earlier. She brought her phone into the shower with her at 8am, just in case. It rang at 8:04.

    Rodeo was coming home.

The Instagram post has gathered more than 2,300 likes. It’s easy to understand why. The story doesn’t need any extra flourishes. A puppy found alone by a river. A medical hold that drew out the waiting. A birthday plan that matched another secret plan, unknown to either of them. A lottery won from inside a shower stall.

It’s the kind of sweetly chaotic origin story that fits perfectly with the “very chaotic parenting era” Kaitlynn described.

Love at First Mutt, the rescue organization that made the match possible, does this kind of work every day: connecting animals in need with families who want them. They get a warm mention in the story, and it’s well earned.

Rodeo is six months old. He has already survived a riverbed, a respiratory infection, and a shelter lottery. He also has a name that suits a dog with a bit of adventure behind him. He joins Dash and the rest of the family, home at last.
