Gavin Newsom Was A Guest During A Recent Episode Of Real Time With Bill Maher
Maher is known for his HBO political talk show, Real Time with Bill Maher. Previously, he was known for hosting the late-night show, Politically Incorrect.
Recently, Maher had Gavin Newsom as a guest on his show. Newsom has been serving as the 40th governor of California, a role he’s had since 2019.
During the episode, Newsom shared some choice words aimed at President Donald Trump. He shared, “To me, that’s the biggest reflection of this moment, just the sewer that we’re living in because of Donald Trump. And he’s allowed all of us to feel free to shove again.”
However, Maher argued that the two weren’t that different. As he pointed out, “But many people would say that you are imitating him. Among all of the people who may or may not be running [for president], you’re the one who kind of imitates his style with the trolling. You’re suing Fox now, I understand.”
Last Year, Newsom Filed A $787 Million Lawsuit Against Fox News & Jesse Watters
When Newsom insisted, “Fox better look to settle right now or apologize for defamation,” Maher replied, “OK, but that sounds exactly like what he does. Suing media?”
To this, Newsom responded that he was putting “a mirror up to” the president, saying it was done “with a sense of humor.” Noting that he has been called out by his behavior by Fox News, he continued to decry Trump’s behavior, saying “none of this is normal” and how he felt that “it’s important to call that out.”
As noted by TV Insider, Maher’s comments about suing Fox were in reference to Newsom’s $787 million lawsuit against Fox News and host Jesse Watters which had been filed back in June. The suit reportedly revolves around false claims about a phone call with Trump concerning Los Angeles. As the outlet noted, a Delaware judge previously rejected Fox’s motion to dismiss the suit last month.
Meanwhile, as Maher also alluded to, Trump has sued both Disney and Paramount since starting his second term in 2024. In a statement with the outlet, Fox News Media released the following statement: “We respectfully disagree with the court’s decision and plan to vigorously defend against this frivolous lawsuit as it’s nothing more than a blatant attempt to silence free speech and weaken the First Amendment.”
