Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have kept their IPL 2026 playoff hopes alive with a clinical eight-wicket victory over Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, and once again, it was Sanju Samson who stood tall under pressure. On a sluggish pitch that tested batters throughout the evening, Samson produced a captain’s knock of unbeaten 87 runs off 52 balls, guiding CSK home with calmness, maturity, and calculated aggression. More importantly, after the match, the stylish right-hander won hearts with his selfless comments about sacrificing a possible century for the team’s cause. The victory marked Chennai’s fifth win of the season and injected fresh life into their campaign at a crucial stage of the tournament.

CSK bowlers set the tone on difficult Delhi surface

After winning the toss, Delhi Capitals chose to bat first, hoping the surface would become tougher under lights. However, CSK’s disciplined bowling attack never allowed the hosts to settle into rhythm.

Spin once again proved decisive for Chennai as Akeal Hosein and Noor Ahmad tightened the screws through the middle overs. Hosein delivered an economical spell of 1/19, while Noor picked up two important wickets and conceded only 22 runs. Delhi kept losing momentum at regular intervals, with their top order struggling to accelerate.

Tristan Stubbs tried to rebuild the innings with a fighting 38, while Sameer Rizvi remained unbeaten on 40, but the Capitals could only manage 155/7 in 20 overs — a total that looked below par considering the dew factor expected later in the evening.

Sanju Samson anchors chase with class and composure

CSK’s chase did not begin smoothly as they slipped to 45/2 early in the innings. The pitch was still offering grip and stroke-making was not straightforward. Samson, however, never panicked.

At one stage, he was batting on a cautious 22 off 22 balls, carefully assessing the conditions and ensuring Chennai did not lose further wickets. Once settled, the Kerala batter shifted gears beautifully. He reached his half-century in the 12th over before taking control against Delhi’s spin attack with fearless yet controlled hitting.

His innings included seven boundaries and six towering sixes, but what impressed fans and experts most was the maturity behind the knock. Rather than chasing personal milestones, Samson focused entirely on finishing the game quickly. He found excellent support from Kartik Sharma, who played a fluent unbeaten 41. Together, the pair stitched an unbeaten 114-run partnership off just 66 deliveries, completely taking the game away from Delhi Capitals. CSK eventually chased down the target in only 17.3 overs, improving their net run rate significantly in the process.

Samson breaks silence on missing out on another hundred

Following the match, Samson revealed that he consciously chose not to think about reaching a century despite being within touching distance of the landmark. His comments earned admiration from fans and former cricketers alike, with many praising his leadership mentality and match awareness.

“A hundred is always special. But for that, I would have had to be a bit selfish. I didn’t say, ‘Take a single, let me get my hundred.’ I thought it was better to win the match for the team,” Samson said during the post-match presentation.

CSK’s playoff hopes rest heavily on Samson’s form

Samson’s remarkable consistency has become one of the biggest positives for Chennai this season. He is currently the only batter in IPL 2026 to score two centuries alongside a half-century and has now amassed 402 runs in the tournament, placing him fifth in the Orange Cap standings.

With the tournament entering its decisive phase, CSK will continue to rely heavily on Samson’s brilliance if they are to secure a place in the playoffs. Judging by his current form and mindset, Chennai fans will believe their campaign is far from over.
