President Trump and first lady Melania Trump celebrated military moms at the White House on Wednesday, honoring their sacrifices and the support they provide their families ahead of Mother’s Day weekend.
The event was held as the Iran war surpassed its fifth week, though a fragile ceasefire has been in place since last month. Mr. Trump said he will resume bombing Iran if Tehran doesn’t agree to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
“No one should ever doubt the resolve of America’s military moms. They’re incredible,” Mr. Trump said. “From the start of our Republic, down to today, our nation’s been strengthened by the love and devotion and commitment of incredible women.”
Mrs. Trump said mothers of service members “find themselves alone, awake with their thoughts, in the darkest hours of their night.”
The first lady, who is also a mother, called on the nation to remember mothers whose spouses are serving overseas.
“At the very heart of America’s strength lies the boundless love and quiet power of mothers,” Mrs. Trump said. “We are the most devoted teachers, gently nurturing empathy, inspiring dreams and guiding our children to goodness. We help them rise with courage when life grows difficult.”
The event brought military mothers from all over the country to the East Room of the White House. Among those in attendance was Melody Wolfe, the mother of West Virginia National Guard Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe.
Staff Sgt. Wolfe and U.S. Army Spc. Sarah Beckstrom were shot in the head during an ambush near the White House in November. While Staff Sgt. Wolfe survived, Beckstrom died the day after the attack.
“We have the nation behind us at a time when nobody thought our boy would make it,” Mrs. Wolfe said. “We have a strong faith in God. And God is what brought our son through this.”
Mother’s Day is Sunday.
