“Star Wars” actor Mark Hamill is facing widespread criticism after posting an image on his verified Bluesky account depicting President Trump dead in a grave alongside the caption “If Only.”

The image, posted directly to Mr. Hamill’s verified Bluesky account, shows a seemingly lifeless Mr. Trump lying in dirt beneath a gravestone reading “DONALD J. TRUMP 1946–2024,” with the words “If Only” printed across the bottom.

If Only- He should live long enough to witness his inevitable devastating loss in the midterms, be held accountable for his unprecedented corruption, impeached, convicted & humiliated for his countless crimes. Long enough to realize he’ll be disgraced in the history books, forevermore. #don_TheCON

In the text accompanying the post, Mr. Hamill, 74, elaborated on the caption.

“He should live long enough to witness his inevitable devastating loss in the midterms, be held accountable for his unprecedented corruption, impeached, convicted & humiliated for his countless crimes,” the actor wrote. “Long enough to realize he’ll be disgraced in the history books, forevermore. #don_TheCON.”

Critics drew a sharp distinction between ordinary political commentary and sharing imagery depicting a sitting president dead in a grave, particularly given multiple recent assassination attempts against Mr. Trump. The post spread rapidly across social media platforms Thursday.

The Bluesky post came just days after Mr. Hamill appeared alongside former President Barack Obama in a Star Wars Day promotional video for the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago. The two videos, released Monday ahead of the center’s June 19 public opening, featured the pair trading puns about empowering future generations, with Mr. Hamill voicing a Yoda impression in response to Mr. Obama’s Star Wars-themed wordplay. Ticket sales for the 19-acre South Side campus opened Wednesday.

The grave post is also reigniting debate over comments made by ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” host Jimmy Kimmel last week. Ahead of the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner — which was cut short when a gunman attempted to breach the Washington Hilton ballroom where Mr. Trump and much of the nation’s political leadership had gathered — Mr. Kimmel made a joke during his Thursday night monologue, saying of first lady Melania Trump, “Mrs. Trump, you have a glow like an expectant widow.”

The suspect, Cole Tomas Allen, was subsequently arrested and charged with the attempted assassination of Mr. Trump.

Mr. Kimmel addressed the backlash on his show the following Monday, calling the remark a “light roast” and saying it was “not, by any stretch of the definition, a call to assassination.”

First lady Melania Trump pushed back, calling on ABC to remove Mr. Kimmel from the air. “His monologue about my family isn’t comedy — his words are corrosive and deepen the political sickness within America,” Mrs. Trump wrote.

Mr. Hamill has not publicly commented on the backlash to the Bluesky post.
