According to Deadline, Hocus Pocus 3 is officially in development from Disney, with original stars Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy all set to return.
Following the success of 2022’s straight-to-streaming Hocus Pocus 2, it is understood that there are plans for a theatrical release this time around. However, the studio declined to comment as the project is still in early stages. The 2022 film garnered over 43.5M views in its first 24 hours online, and the reaction was overwhelmingly positive at 90% on most social media metrics.
The original film was set on a Halloween Night when three 17th-century witches, Winnie (Midler), Sarah (Parker), and Mary (Najimy), are resurrected in Salem, Massachusetts, hundreds of years after their heyday. The trio then attempt to steal the life essence from the town’s children so they can have eternal life. It was a cult classic for many years before Hocus Pocus 2 was released.
Bette Midler recently revealed that a script has been completed for the third film, but the producers are working out “all those logistical things” before they can return. She told host Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live that “they sent a script. A lot of it was brilliant, I got very excited, and now we’re trying to figure out what it is and where it’s going to be and how much it’s going to cost and all those logistical things.”
Hocus Pocus and Hocus Pocus 2 are now streaming on Disney+.
