HBO has greenlit its Harry Potter TV series for a second season despite it being seven months before the show’s debut.
The news was widely expected, given the network’s plan to adapt the whole book franchise into seven seasons of television over the course of a decade, but it has now been confirmed. Season 2, which will be based on the second book, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, will begin filming later this year. The first season is due to debut this Christmas.
Jon Brown, who was a writer on the first season of the adaptation, has been promoted to serve as co-showrunner on Season 2 as part of the announcement. He joins current showrunner Francesca Gardiner, who said in a statement, “As we have laid out our plans for the overlapping production schedules to finish Season 1 by Christmas and to return to production for Season 2 this autumn, it has become clear that bringing on a co-showrunner is the key to maintaining our momentum. I’ve loved working with Jon from the very first day we met on ‘Succession’ through to these recent times together on ‘Harry Potter.’ Not only do I have huge admiration for his writing, but he’s also a brilliant collaborator and a lovely person. We are lucky to have him.”
The first season of the highly anticipated show will cover Harry’s first year at Hogwarts as he comes to terms with the world of magic. The first trailer for the series was released earlier this year and featured lots of key moments from the books, iconic set pieces, and glimpses of the central characters. Dominic McLaughlin (Harry Potter), Arabella Stanton (Hermione Granger), and Alastair Stout (Ron Weasley) were cast from an open call of more than 30,000 children before being chosen for the lead roles. Other people already confirmed for the show include John Lithgow, Nick Frost and Paapa Essiedu.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone premieres this Christmas on HBO Max.
