Charli XCX has released “Rock Music,” the first single from her upcoming unannounced album.
After declaring the “dance floor is dead” and stating that she needed a reset after the Brat era, “Rock Music” is a tongue-in-cheek song that isn’t actually a rock song. “A video of me making a song called ‘rock music’ that is not actually rock music,” she says, touching on the music video. “…Which is funny because I never said I was making a rock album.”

The inspiration for the video began when director and collaborator Aidan Zamiri was with Charli in Paris last October. “It was fun to be immediately reactive and come up with the idea for the video as the song was still being made,” she says on Instagram. “The song ideas informed the video, and the video ideas informed the song. Full circle kinda thing. Thanks to everyone who got together in Staten Island to make this happen. It was a really special day.”
Charli is already teasing more from this upcoming era, posting “more tomorrow” on her other Instagram account. Earlier this week, Charli was announced as a headliner at Austin City Limits this fall following headline sets at Lollapalooza in Chicago and Reading and Leeds in the U.K.
