In a one-sided encounter on May 8, Delhi Capitals (DC) posted a below-par total of 142/8 and were then comfortably chased down by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in just 14.2 overs. Finn Allen’s explosive, unbeaten century powered KKR to victory, pushing DC further down the standings and making their path to the IPL 2026 playoffs extremely difficult.
Despite the heavy defeat, the DC remain mathematically alive in the playoff race. However, with only a handful of matches remaining and their Net Run Rate taking a severe hit, Axar Patel’s side now faces an uphill battle to stay in contention.
Finn Allen’s century seals a comfortable win for KKR
Delhi Capitals struggled to build momentum after being asked to bat first. Opener Pathum Nissanka played a fighting knock of 50, but the rest of the batting lineup failed to accelerate on a surface that offered good value for shots. KKR’s bowlers maintained pressure throughout the innings, especially with their spinners controlling the middle overs and the pacers executing well at the death. As a result, DC could only manage to score 142 runs for the loss of 8 wickets.
In reply, Finn Allen produced one of the standout innings of the IPL 2026 season. The explosive opener smashed his maiden IPL century in just 47 balls and completely dismantled the Delhi bowling attack. Cameron Green provided excellent support at the other end as KKR chased down the target with ease, securing an emphatic eight-wicket victory. The dominant win not only boosted KKR’s playoff hopes but also left Delhi Capitals in a dangerous position in the points table.
IPL 2026 playoffs qualification scenario for Delhi Capitals
The defeat has left the Delhi Capitals with just 8 points from 11 matches and a poor Net Run Rate of around -1.154. Their qualification equation is now extremely complicated, with very little room for error in the remainder of the league stage.
To stay in contention, Delhi Capitals must win all their remaining three matches. Even then, they can only reach a maximum of 14 points. While 14 points have been enough to qualify in past seasons (notably RCB in 2024), it is no longer considered safe in a highly competitive 2026 season.
Most teams in the top half already have 12 to 14 points, and several others are well-placed to cross the 14-point mark. DC’s poor net run rate (currently one of the worst in the league) means that even if they win their remaining games, they will need those victories to come by big margins to improve their NRR significantly. They will also heavily depend on favourable results from other matches.
Remaining fixtures for Delhi Capitals
Delhi Capitals face a difficult run of matches to close out their league campaign:
- May 11 vs Punjab Kings (away)
- May 17 vs Rajasthan Royals (home)
- May 24 vs Kolkata Knight Riders (away)
While Delhi Capitals still have a slim mathematical chance of qualifying for the IPL 2026 playoffs, the combination of poor Net Run Rate, difficult remaining fixtures, and intense competition from other teams makes the challenge incredibly tough. They will need near-perfect performances in the final stretch and a bit of help from elsewhere to keep their campaign alive.
