Molly Ringwald attended a screening of The Invite, Olivia Wilde‘s new A24 film, and she liked it a lot.

The actress, best known for her iconic 1980s work in The Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink, posted about it on Instagram after the event. “Another great night,” she wrote. “The Invite directed by Olivia Wilde. So good. Beautiful dinner with good friends.” She tagged both the film and A24 in the caption and finished with a red heart emoji.

It’s a short caption. But “so good” is pretty clear. Ringwald doesn’t flood her feed with movie opinions or endorsements. A named shoutout like this is a signal. It means she walked out genuinely happy.

The Invite marks Wilde’s third time directing a feature film. Her first, Booksmart, came out in 2019 to strong reviews and quickly built a devoted following. Her follow-up, Don’t Worry Darling, arrived in 2022. That one had a rough road – a lot of behind-the-scenes controversy overshadowed the film’s press coverage. A new project at A24 feels like a fresh start for Wilde as a filmmaker.

Landing at A24 is a big deal all on its own. The studio has built a reputation for releasing ambitious films. People talk about them long after release. Hereditary, Midsommar, and Everything Everywhere All at Once are just a few titles from their recent catalog. A24 picks up films carefully. They usually see something genuinely distinctive in whatever project they back. The Invite getting that distribution is already a vote of confidence. For a director coming back from a difficult experience with her last film, that kind of support from a major label says something.

Ringwald didn’t go into any detail about the film itself. She kept the post warm and brief. She attended a screening, had dinner with friends, and called it a great night. That’s really the whole thing.

But that simple, unprompted reaction carries real weight. Nobody arranged this post. No publicist drafted the caption. Ringwald just watched the movie, liked it, and said so. Honest word-of-mouth matters for a film building its audience. A respected name saying they genuinely liked something tends to stick around.

Beyond her iconic 1980s films, Ringwald has stayed active across TV and film for decades. She’s been candid in interviews about what it was like to be a young actress in Hollywood during that era. She still shows up to screenings and supports new work in the industry. Her Brat Pack years may be what most people know her for. But decades in this industry give her real credibility. She knows good film.

The Invite is still building its wider profile. No confirmed release date has been made public. But early screenings like this are often how films start getting real momentum. Early buzz doesn’t get more genuine than this.
