Microsoft and Discord have partnered on a new Xbox Game Pass perk for Discord Nitro subscribers.
As leaked last month, those who are signed up for the $13.99/month Nitro will be given access to an Xbox Game Pass “starter edition.” This version of Game Pass offers a smaller catalogue of 50-plus Xbox and PC games, including Fallout 4, Stardew Valley, DayZ, Deep Rock Galactic, Overcooked 2, and Grounded, with additional titles set to be added over time. Nitro users will also be granted up to 10 hours of Xbox Cloud Gaming streaming each month.
Those who are subscribed to Discord Nitro can find a new Xbox Game Pass card in the Nitro Rewards page. From there, you’ll have to link your Discord and Microsoft accounts to access Game Pass starter edition.
Interestingly, the companies aren’t using “started edition” as an official, “proper noun” label à la Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. That said, it’s similar in features to the base Game Pass Essential tier, which costs $13.99/month and includes access to around 50 games and online multiplayer, among other perks.
Meanwhile, Game Pass Ultimate subscribers will also get the following Discord benefits:
- 250 Discord Orbs each month
- 1.2x extra Orbs when completing Quests
- Automatically applied Discord Shop discounts
The deeper Discord and Xbox partnership comes as Microsoft has been working to overhaul Xbox Game Pass. Last month, Xbox boss Asha Sharma acknowledged that “Game Pass Ultimate has become too expensive for too many players,” leading Xbox to reduce the cost of the service in exchange for removing its perk for new day-one Call of Duty releases. This follows an internal memo in which Sharma said she plans to “evolve Game Pass into a more flexible system” for consumers.
