Prime Video have finalised and revealed the release date for The Rings of Power season three, the junior season of the fantasy series set in The Lord of the Rings universe, during a speech at Amazon‘s annual Upfront.
The show, run by developers J. D. Payne and Patrick McKay, adapts from the Middle-earth history as noted in the appendices in the original fantasy novel, The Lord of the Rings, by English author and philologist J.R.R. Tolkien. The novel narrates an expedition carried out by Hobbits, wizards and elves through Middle-earth to destroy the One Ring to prevent a dark lord called Sauron from ruling the land.
Set thousands of years before Tolkien’s first novel and narrating Middle-earth’s Second Age, the first season of the show charts a remergence from the darkness as the central characters find themselves in an era of peace and harmony. However, a lingering mystery about the whereabouts and plans of the Dark Lord threatens the land, and the series’s conclusion, depicting the forging of the first Rings of Power, only amplifies the impending doom.
Season two takes us into Sauron’s rise to power following the creation of the Rings, manipulating the Elves to create more as a means of seizing complete power. The second season also leads viewers to the climax of the Siege of Eregion.
Now the third season is on the way, expected to lead us through thousands of years after the events of season two, where a mighty war between the Elves and the Dark Lord is at its height, as Sauron will stop at nothing to complete his Ring creation.
The Head of Global Television at Amazon MGM Studios, Peter Friedlander, praised the show at the talk.
“From the very beginning, this series has embodied the scale, ambition, and cinematic storytelling that define Prime Video’s biggest global series,” he shared. “The extraordinary response from millions of fans around the world has made it clear that this journey through Middle-earth continues to resonate, and that momentum has only grown heading into Season Three.”
The show’s cast includes Morfydd Clark, Robert Aramayo, Sophia Nomvete and Charlie Vickers. It stands as TV’s most expensive show and landed a total of around 315 million viewers from both seasons.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power returns to Prime Video on November 11th.
