Tamron Hall is known to many for her namesake talk show. However, she’s had a prominent career in broadcast journalism, including her past work with NBC. Recently, she touched on her decision to leave, revealing that she even walked away from a $2 million contract. She also highlighted just what helped her make her choice.
Tamron Hall Worked On Various Programs For NBC, Including Today’s Take & Dateline
Hall is known to many for hosting her namesake syndicated talk show, Tamron Hall. This Manhattan-based show has been running since 2019.
Prior to this, Hall had worked as a news correspondent for NBC News. Serving many roles for the network, she was a daytime anchor for MSNBC and a co-host on Today‘s third hour, Today’s Take.
However, Hall walked away from NBC in 2017. Recently, she looked back on this decision in a new interview with Scott Evans as part of his House Guest series.
Hall explained that her agent at the time sent her a message telling her, “You’re no longer in. Here’s what they’re offering.” Noting that she also worked at Dateline and MSNBC Live, she shared, “He proceeded to bullet point in a text all these things that they were offering to keep me.”
At the time, Hall was being cut from Today in favor of Megyn Kelly, taking over Hall’s 9 AM slot. Kelly’s run on the network ultimately proved short-lived, lasting around a year.
Hall Then Shared The Powerful Advice Her Mother Shared With Her At The Time
Hall, who was on her way to MSNBC at the time, revealed that she was being offered a $2 million a year contract. However, she rejected this, sharing, “I wrote my agent back. And I said, ‘I’ll pass.’”
Evans expressed shock over her decision. However, Hall felt, “All money’s not good money. It’s not.” She then shared that she texted her mother, Mary Newton, the first person she broke the news to, telling her that she was “done.”
Tamron then shared the advice her mother gave her. As she explained, “She said to me, ‘I am so proud of you because do you know how many times we’ve had to get off the sidewalk for someone else to walk?’ I thought about all the other young Black women in journalism. And I said, ‘If they see me lose, they may think they can’t win.’ And that day is why I turned it down.”
As noted by People, the decision to replace Hall and Al Roker’s show with Kelly was criticized by the National Association of Black Journalists, accusing the network of “whitewashing.” In response, the network shared, “NBC News has a long and proven history as an industry leader in newsroom diversity.” Reportedly, the network later met with representatives of NABJ to discuss the matter at the time.
