Words hurt, and people need to keep speaking up in order to raise awareness. Recently, the hit HBO Max series, Euphoria, and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson freely used the r-word. That led a Love on the Spectrum star to slam the way that they freely dropped the word. Keep reading for more details on how the cast member expressed their disdain.
All In Bad Taste
There are certain words that people are raised not to say or even think of saying. The r-word is just one of many, and it cannot be taken lightly. Recently, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson appeared at The Roast of Kevin Hart. While he was there, he referred to pro-basketball player, Draymond Green, as “Dret***ed.” Along with that, the hit HBO Max series Euphoria has openly and repeatedly used the r-word, not thinking a thing of it. Maybe they are trying to mimic how Generation Alpha speaks, but it is still cold and cruel. That caused Love on the Spectrum star Dani Bowman to speak up and out.
She made it clear that this is not funny or appropriate, despite really liking The Rock. When she heard what he said at the roast, she was disheartened. Moreover, Dani made it clear that he royally screwed up with his speech. As for Euphoria and how often and loosely they have been using the word, she is over it. She does not think it is as funny or “edgy” as the writers may believe it to be. Finally, Dani stated that it is really hard to see the r-word becoming “socially acceptable.”
She and the Love on the Spectrum cast have done a phenomenal job bringing their lifestyles to the mainstream, and viewers adore them. To diminish that is unkind and cruel, but Sheryl Underwood seemed to think differently. She did not mind what The Rock said at the roast, believing comedy is different, and anything essentially goes. Fans of Dani and the whole cast did feel that using the r-word casually was extremely ignorant and in poor taste.
Defending Dani
While some maintained that it was “just a word,” others could see where the Love on the Spectrum star was coming from. They understood why Dani Bowman would take offense and why she would want people to think before they speak:
- I agree with her. People are trying to move beyond insults and stigma. Insulting people who have intellectual disabilities is not the flex you think it is. It’s ignorant.
- I’m not triggered. I just feel sorry for you. It’s sad to be so heartless. Hurt people, hurt people.
