Reports have confirmed that filmmaker Kenneth Lonergan is adding household names Aubrey Plaza, Adam Driver, Vanessa Kirby, and Matthew Broderick to the cast of his upcoming drama, Tomorrow is a Drag. This marks the Manchester by the Sea creator’s fourth directorial credit, following additional writing credits on features such as 1999’s Analyse This and 2002’s Gangs of New York.
It’s been confirmed that MK2 Films will be handling international sales of the film.
Plot details are yet to be revealed, but there is anticipation that the feature will showcase Lonergan’s signature style of detailed, complex emotional states, flawed characters, intimate moments, and a naturalistic approach, all explored against a subtle touch of humour.
The director’s other filmmaking credits include his 2000 feature debut as a director, You Can Count on Me, featuring Laura Linney, Mark Ruffalo, Rory Culkin, and Matthew Broderick and 2011’s Margaret, starring Anna Paquin as the titular character. His aforementioned 2016 feature, Manchester by the Sea, his last film, earned immense critical acclaim following its Sundance debut and was nominated for six Oscars, winning two (Best Screenplay and Best Actor).
Meanwhile, actor Driver’s most recent film credits include Jim Jarmusch’s anthology Father Mother Sister Brother and Francis Ford Coppola’s epic space opera Megalopolis. He is due a 2026 Cannes Film Festival appearance in Paper Tiger, a crime drama shake-up written and directed by James Gray which also features Scarlett Johansson and Miles Teller. The film is up for the grand prize of the Palme d’Or.
Plaza has featured in Ethan Coen’s solo project Honey Don’t and also starred alongside Driver in Megalopolis. She is also scheduled for upcoming appearances in The Accompanist by Zach Woods, where she will star alongside Susan Sarandon, Everly Carganilla, Ilia Volok, John Rothman, Helena Howard, and Kevyn Morrow, as well as the animation, live-action hybrid comedy Animal Friends by Peter Atencio.
Kirby is scheduled for the mammoth Marvel film Avengers: Doomsday, reprising her role as Susan Storm from the MCU’s new rendition of the Fantastic Four, and Broderick’s role in this drama will be his fourth time working under Lonergan’s direction.
