The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season was a roller-coaster ride of emotions, but for Delhi Capitals (DC), it ultimately culminated in a familiar sense of heartbreak. Despite executing massive overhauls and flashing moments of brilliant brilliance, the Capitals concluded their league phase with seven victories and seven defeats across 14 matches. Amassing 14 points, they finished a disappointing sixth on the points table, agonizingly missing out on a coveted playoff spot once again.

A campaign heavily marred by a fragile home record, tactical selection errors, and staggering underperformances from heavy investments has forced the team management to look in the mirror. With the competitive landscape shifting rapidly, DC face the critical task of clearing out structural deadwood to secure financial flexibility and a balanced roster. As conversations pivot toward building a championship-calibre team for the IPL 2027 cycle, several high-profile names could find themselves on the chopping block. Let’s analyze five players who are likely to be released by Delhi Capitals ahead of next season.

5 players who might get released by DC ahead of IPL 2027

    1) Mitchell Starc

The inclusion of Australian pace spearhead Mitchell Starc was anticipated to solve Delhi’s long-standing death bowling vulnerabilities. However, the veteran quick endured a profoundly underwhelming 2026 season that stood in stark contrast to his astronomical price tag. Starc struggled immensely to find his rhythm, leaking runs at a high economy rate and continuously failing to deliver those trademark lethal yorkers when the pressure peaked in the final overs.

Given his high-maintenance salary cap and the franchise’s pressing need to acquire multi-dimensional domestic assets, retaining an aging overseas pacer with diminishing returns is no longer a sustainable plan. Delhi Capitals are highly expected to cut ties with Starc, allocating his massive purse toward a younger, more dynamic bowling group.

    2) Prithvi Shaw

Once hailed as the absolute future of the franchise’s top-order batting, Prithvi Shaw’s ongoing tenure with Delhi Capitals appears to have reached its natural expiration point. The dynamic opener has continuously battled issues revolving around technical vulnerabilities against high-quality pace, fitness standards, and prolonged patches of poor form.

During the 2026 tournament, Shaw was repeatedly benched or left underutilized as the management preferred explosive alternatives like Abhishek Porel and steady contributors like Pathum Nissanka. With the team explicitly prioritizing a culture of peak athletic fitness and structural consistency, moving on from Shaw ahead of IPL 2027 would liberate vital funds and allow both parties a clean, much-needed fresh start.

    3) T. Natarajan

Brought into the Delhi Capitals camp to add variety with his left-arm angle and proven death-overs expertise, T. Natarajan‘s 2026 campaign never truly took flight. The seamer featured in 10 matches but managed to scalp only a mere five wickets. While his primary tactical role centred around bowling the most difficult, high-pressure overs, his inability to consistently break partnerships left the DC defensive strategy completely exposed.

At this stage in his career, Natarajan’s recurring injury scares and dropping wicket-taking frequency make it difficult for the Capitals to justify keeping him in a restricted, specialized role. The franchise will likely look to release him into the auction pool to scout for a more robust and versatile Indian fast bowler.

    4) Sameer Rizvi

Young domestic batter Sameer Rizvi arrived at Delhi Capitals with substantial hype as an aggressive middle-order finisher. Unfortunately, the 2026 season proved that the immense pressure of the IPL stage might still require refined developmental time. Rizvi looked visibly out of depth against elite spin and high-pace variations, struggling to rotate strike or clean-hit the ball during the death overs.

Because temporary or developmental domestic assignments are evaluated strictly on immediate impact during disappointing team campaigns, Rizvi’s lack of output makes him a prime candidate for release. Delhi will likely search for a seasoned domestic finisher to bridge their middle-order gaps.

    5) Dushmantha Chameera

Sri Lankan speedster Dushmantha Chameera was brought into the DC squad primarily as an injury replacement or tactical backup option to safeguard the overseas bowling reserves. However, in a squad already packed with high-profile international fast-bowling options, Chameera found himself largely confined to the sidelines, rarely breaking into the preferred playing XI.

As franchises across the league carefully audit their squad depth following a missed playoff window, overseas backup players who consume foreign slot spaces without active on-field contributions are the first to be let go. Chameera is almost certain to be released to open up a clean slate for international recruitment.

Releasing underperforming assets is merely the initial phase of a vital squad transformation for the franchise.

Big changes likely as team prepares for IPL 2027

Delhi Capitals enter the preparatory phase for IPL 2027 knowing that minor adjustments will no longer suffice. The core management is projected to orchestrate a fundamental restructuring of their roster strategy. While retaining the foundational elements of their squad, such as the elite spin of Kuldeep Yadav, the all-round dependability of Axar Patel, and the clinical power of Tristan Stubbs, the surrounding pieces require an immediate upgrade.

The primary focus heading into the next auction will undoubtedly center on constructing a fiercely competitive pace attack and securing an explosive, yet highly reliable Indian core. With crucial leadership choices on the horizon to support star figureheads like KL Rahul, the capitals must navigate their upcoming releases perfectly to build a unit capable of lifting their elusive maiden IPL trophy.
