An unforgettable opening day of Test cricket unfolded at Lord’s on June 4, 2026, leaving fans breathless as the first Test between England and New Zealand swung like a pendulum. On a surface assisting the seamers, a staggering 16 wickets tumbled before bad light brought an early end to a chaotic day’s play. By the close of stumping, New Zealand found themselves at 61 for 6 after 19.2 overs, trailing England’s meager first-innings total of 140 by 79 runs.

Kyle Jamieson tears through England’s batting order with a brilliant five-for

Choosing to bowl first under overcast London skies, New Zealand’s bowling unit extracted immense response from the historic Lord’s pitch. Towering paceman Kyle Jamieson ran riot through the English batting lineup, capturing a sensational five-wicket haul to restrict the hosts to just 140 runs in 39.4 overs. Jamieson finished with brilliant figures of 5 for 62 from his 14 overs, using his immense height and steep bounce to dismantle the top and lower order.

England’s innings got off to a bumpy start when debutant Emilio Gay fell for 8, caught by Daryl Mitchell off Jamieson’s bowling in the sixth over. While Ben Duckett fought hard for his 19 off 37 balls, Nathan Smith pinned him leg-before to trigger a massive collapse. Will O’Rourke quickly joined the party by dismissing Jacob Bethell for 6 and the talismanic Joe Root for just 1 run, leaving England reeling at 34 for 4.

Middle-order batter Harry Brook counter-attacked brilliantly, hitting nine boundaries to bring up a gritty half-century. Brook top-scored with 56 runs off 71 deliveries, putting up a temporary resistance. However, Jamieson returned to slice through the remaining resistance. He clean-bowled wicketkeeper Jamie Smith for 16, forced an edge from England skipper Ben Stokes for 12, and trapped Gus Atkinson leg-before for 4. When Jamieson had Ollie Robinson caught behind for 15, he completed his deserved five-for. Nathan wrapped up the innings by dismissing Shoaib Bashir, leaving Josh Tongue stranded on 10 not out.

Ollie Robinson puts New Zealand batters to the test with an exceptional spell

If New Zealand believed they had completely seized control of the ENG vs NZ match, England’s frontline paceman Robinson had other plans. Robinson turned the game on its head with an astonishing new-ball spell that ripped the heart out of the Blackcaps’ top order. Operating with immaculate discipline and lethal movement, Robinson finished the day with incredible figures of 4 for 10 from his 6 overs, including 3 maidens.

The visitors suffered a historic top-order collapse, collapsing to a minuscule 2 runs for 3 wickets within the first two overs. Robinson struck gold in his very first over, trapping opener Devon Conway leg-before for just 1. Two balls later, he forced a crucial edge from New Zealand’s modern great Kane Williamson, who departed for a two-ball duck, caught cleanly by Gay. Robinson then completed a magical over by pinning Rachin Ravindra leg-before for another duck.

Atkinson piled on the pressure from the other end, trapping New Zealand captain Tom Latham leg-before for 3 after a lengthy 21-ball vigil. Robinson then returned to bowl Mitchell for 12, leaving the Kiwis sweating at 20 for 5. Tongue kept the foot on the pedal by clean-bowling Tom Blundell for 4, reducing the score to 29 for 6.

Fortunately for the visitors, Glenn Phillips launched a crucial counter-offensive, hitting 31 not out off 34 balls with five boundaries and a six. Alongside debutant Nathan Smith (6 not out), Phillips guided New Zealand to 61 for 6 before bad light forced the players off the field, setting up a thrilling Day 2.

There are spells that win matches.

And then there are spells that completely change the story.

    England: 140 all out.
