Indian cricket enters a significant transitional phase as they transition from their colourful IPL jerseys into the traditional Test whites for the highly anticipated one-off Test match against Afghanistan, commencing June 06, 2026. The historic clash is unfolding at the brand-new Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh, marking the venue’s entry as India‘s 31st Test ground.

Winning the toss under hot and humid conditions, young Indian captain Shubman Gill elected to bat first. Though this standalone red-ball fixture does not offer points toward the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) cycle, it stands as a critical strategic junction for a transitioning Indian side. Following a disappointing 0-2 series defeat in South Africa late last year, head coach Gautam Gambhir and the team management are leveraging this match as a vital testing ground to establish solid player combinations ahead of their gruelling upcoming tours of Sri Lanka and Australia.

Why Devdutt Padikkal is not playing today’s game against Afghanistan in the one-off Test?

The most talked-about talking point leading into the New Chandigarh Test was the battle for India’s crucial No. 3 batting position. Ultimately, Karnataka’s elegant left-hander Devdutt Padikkal missed out on a spot in the playing XI. The reason behind Padikkal’s exclusion comes down to a deliberate tactical strategy by head coach Gautam Gambhir to give the incumbent No. 3, B Sai Sudharsan, a extended and fair run in the side.

Padikkal made a roaring case for selection in the domestic circuit, accumulating 543 runs at an average of 60.33 in the Ranji Trophy, which included a monumental 232 in the semi-finals. Despite this brilliant form, the team management decided to resist a reactionary change. Addressing the media ahead of the match, Gambhir clarified that judging players on just a handful of matches hinders long-term team building. Sudharsan, coming off a spectacular 700-run IPL season, was preferred because the management wants to offer him a definitive security blanket to master the pivotal position rather than continuing a game of musical chairs. Consequently, Padikkal will have to bide his time on the bench despite his superb red-ball form.

Manav Suthar earns maiden Test cap as India hand youngster debut

While Padikkal missed out on the batting front, India’s blueprint for the future became crystal clear on the bowling side. Young left-arm spinner Manav Suthar earned his maiden Test cap, presented to him ahead of play at Mullanpur. With the veteran Ravindra Jadeja rested for this one-off fixture, Suthar was thrown straight into the deep end alongside Kuldeep Yadav and Washington Sundar.

According to Gambhir, Suthar’s inclusion serves a broader tactical purpose: identifying a dependable fourth spin option for the upcoming two-Test series on the turning tracks of Sri Lanka this August. Suthar edged out fellow domestic standout Harsh Dubey for the spot, providing Gill with variations in release points on a pitch expected to get slower and lower. Afghanistan also embraced the youth movement, handing a debut Test cap to their exciting young spin bowling all-rounder, Nangeyalia Kharote.
