In a massive shake-up to India‘s white-ball leadership setup, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officially ushered in a new era for Indian cricket on Saturday. Meeting in Mumbai to finalize transition blueprints for the upcoming multi-format assignments, the senior selection committee, spearheaded by chief selector Ajit Agarkar, dropped a series of bombshell announcements.

The biggest talking point emerged from the shortest format: a changing of the guard tailored for future global campaigns, including the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. With bold roster selections stretching across the United Kingdom, the Asian Games in Japan, and developmental block-building in Sri Lanka, the BCCI has formally hit the reset button on India’s T20 blueprint.

Shreyas Iyer replaces Suryakumar Yadav as India’s T20I captain

The headliner of the selection meeting is the appointment of 31-year-old Shreyas Iyer as India’s new T20I captain. In a ruthless call, the selection committee chose to completely drop incumbent skipper Suryakumar Yadav from the squad. Despite leading India to a T20 World Cup triumph earlier this year, Suryakumar’s extended lean patch, averaging just 20.76 for Mumbai Indians in the recent IPL and failing to hit a single international fifty over a 18-month stretch, forced the selectors’ hands, amidst suspicions of an underlying wrist injury.

Iyer, who has not played a T20I since December 2023, completes a dramatic return straight into the leadership seat. The astute tactical mind is being rewarded for his historic milestone of leading three different franchises (Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Punjab Kings) to IPL finals. Young Mumbai Indians batter Tilak Varma has been elevated to the vice-captaincy role to assist Iyer.

The squad also marks a historic milestone with the inclusion of 15-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi. The teenager earned his maiden senior call-up following a breathtaking domestic and IPL run, where he captured the Orange Cap. Fast bowler Prince Yadav and left-arm spinner Harsh Dubey have also broken into the senior fray as fresh bowling faces.

BCCI announces squads for Asian Games, Ireland and England Tours

The selection committee finalized three distinct squads to handle a heavily congested international calendar. India’s top-tier unit will head to the UK for two T20Is against Ireland in Belfast (June 26 and 28), immediately followed by five T20Is and three ODIs in England starting July 1. Concurrently, the BCCI has named a powerhouse roster for the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, this September, fulfilling the government’s preference to defend India’s gold medal with an elite core, featuring frontline spearhead Jasprit Bumrah alongside Iyer.

India Squad for Ireland and England T20Is:

Shreyas Iyer (c), Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, Shivam Dube, Tilak Varma (vc), Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Varun Chakravarthy, Ravi Bishnoi, Mohammad Siraj, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, Prince Yadav, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.

Alongside the senior T20I updates, a shadow red-ball development path was drawn up. Wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel will captain an India “A” squad for multi-day matches in Sri Lanka to help test players acclimate to spin-heavy conditions ahead of crucial World Test Championship assignments.

India “A” Squad for Sri Lanka Multi-Day Matches:
