According to Suryakumar, he and Shreyas have shared a long cricketing journey through the Mumbai system, making the latter’s elevation even more special. He also pointed out that India’s last three T20I captains have all emerged from Mumbai’s cricketing structure, underlining the city’s continued contribution to Indian cricket.
His response stood in contrast to the intense debate that followed the selectors’ decision, with many fans expressing surprise at the sudden change in leadership.
“I am so happy for Shreyas for becoming the captain of the Indian T20I team. We have played all our cricket together here in Mumbai and it feels amazing that the last three T20 captains of India have all come from Mumbai,” said Suryakumar.

Iyer’s appointment marks one of the most impressive comeback stories in recent Indian cricket. The Mumbai batter had not featured in a T20I since December 2023 after falling out of favour amid questions regarding his commitment to domestic cricket. However, Iyer responded in emphatic fashion.
