India‘s T20 World Cup-winning captain Suryakumar Yadav has reacted with remarkable grace after being replaced by Shreyas Iyer as the captain of India’s T20I team. Despite being left out of the squad for India’s first assignment following the 2026 T20 World Cup, Suryakumar chose to focus on celebrating Iyer’s achievement rather than dwelling on his own disappointment.

Speaking during the toss of a Mumbai T20 League fixture between Triumph Knights MNE and SoBo Mumbai Falcons, the stylish batter expressed happiness for his longtime teammate and highlighted the growing influence of Mumbai cricket on the national stage.

Suryakumar’s comments reflected his positive outlook despite a major setback in his international career. The right-hander, who led India to a historic T20 World Cup title defence earlier this year, said it was a proud moment to see another Mumbai cricketer entrusted with leading the national side.

According to Suryakumar, he and Shreyas have shared a long cricketing journey through the Mumbai system, making the latter’s elevation even more special. He also pointed out that India’s last three T20I captains have all emerged from Mumbai’s cricketing structure, underlining the city’s continued contribution to Indian cricket.

His response stood in contrast to the intense debate that followed the selectors’ decision, with many fans expressing surprise at the sudden change in leadership.

“I am so happy for Shreyas for becoming the captain of the Indian T20I team. We have played all our cricket together here in Mumbai and it feels amazing that the last three T20 captains of India have all come from Mumbai,” said Suryakumar.

    Selectors look toward the future

The decision to move on from Suryakumar was reportedly part of a broader long-term strategy. The selection committee, headed by Ajit Agarkar, has begun planning for major events scheduled in 2028, including the T20 World Cup and cricket’s return to the Olympic Games.

While Suryakumar’s leadership credentials remained strong following India’s global success, concerns over his recent batting performances appear to have influenced the selectors’ thinking. Over the last 18 months, the explosive batter has struggled to consistently replicate the form that once made him one of the most feared T20 players in the world.

His underwhelming campaign at the T20 World Cup further intensified competition from younger players and emerging performers waiting for opportunities at the highest level.

    Iyer completes remarkable comeback

Iyer’s appointment marks one of the most impressive comeback stories in recent Indian cricket. The Mumbai batter had not featured in a T20I since December 2023 after falling out of favour amid questions regarding his commitment to domestic cricket. However, Iyer responded in emphatic fashion. He captained Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL 2024 title before guiding Punjab Kings to the final the following season. More importantly, he transformed his T20 game, becoming a far more aggressive batter against both pace and spin.

Over the last two IPL seasons, Iyer maintained a strike rate well above 165, showcasing a fearless approach that strengthened his case for a national recall. His performances ultimately convinced the selectors that he was the right candidate to lead India’s next generation of T20 cricketers.
