The IPL 2026 season did not go according to plan for Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Despite entering the tournament with a balanced squad and several high-profile signings, the five-time champions struggled to maintain consistency throughout the campaign. Injuries to key players, underwhelming returns from expensive acquisitions, and a lack of impact from several overseas recruits left the franchise with plenty of questions to answer heading into the next season.

Known for backing players for long periods, CSK have traditionally avoided making wholesale changes. However, with IPL 2027 approaching and the franchise looking to build a stronger squad around its emerging core, the management could be forced to part ways with a few players who failed to justify their investment. Releasing certain names would also provide valuable salary-cap flexibility ahead of the mini-auction. Let’s take a look at five players who could be released by Chennai Super Kings before IPL 2027.

5 players who might get released by CSK ahead of IPL 2027

    1) Rahul Chahar

Rahul Chahar arrived at Chennai Super Kings during the IPL 2026 auction for ₹5.2 crore and was expected to add depth and experience to the spin department. However, the leg-spinner barely featured during the campaign and played only one match.
His lone appearance came against Punjab Kings (PBKS), where he endured a difficult outing and finished with figures of 0/46.

With CSK already possessing multiple spin options like Noor Ahmad and Akeal Hosein available, retaining a player at such a price without a defined role may not make financial sense. Releasing Chahar could allow the franchise to target a more impactful option in the auction.

    2) Prashant Veer

Prashant Veer was one of the biggest surprises of the IPL 2026 auction when CSK spent a staggering ₹14.2 crore to secure his services, making him one of the joint-most expensive players in IPL auction history. The talented all-rounder failed to produce the desired returns. He featured in six matches and scored only 90 runs in five innings while struggling to cement his place in the playing XI.

Given the massive investment attached to him, CSK could consider releasing Veer and attempting to buy him back at a significantly lower price during the IPL 2027 mini-auction, thereby creating additional purse space while still retaining the possibility of bringing back a player they clearly rate highly.

    3) Matt Henry

The experienced New Zealand pacer was signed for ₹2 crore ahead of IPL 2026 and was expected to strengthen CSK’s pace attack. However, his stint with the franchise never really took off. Matt Henry featured in three matches, conceding 130 runs while taking only two wickets. His economy rate remained a major concern, and he struggled to make an impact during crucial phases of the innings.

With promising Indian pacers such as Anshul Kamboj and Mukesh Choudhary already part of the setup, CSK may prefer investing in younger domestic options rather than retaining an overseas fast bowler who failed to deliver consistently.

    4) Spencer Johnson

Spencer Johnson joined Chennai Super Kings in March 2026 as a replacement for the injured Nathan Ellis. Signed for ₹1.5 crore, the Australian left-arm quick was expected to provide pace and variation. However, Johnson found it difficult to adapt and managed only two wickets in three matches. He also conceded 112 runs at an economy rate exceeding 10 runs per over.

Considering his limited impact and the availability of multiple overseas pace options in future auctions, CSK could opt to release Johnson and pursue alternative fast-bowling reinforcements ahead of IPL 2027.

    5) Khaleel Ahmed

Khaleel Ahmed’s IPL 2026 season was cut short after he suffered a serious Grade 2 right quadriceps tear during CSK’s clash against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). The injury ruled him out for the remainder of the tournament and forced the franchise to bring in an injury replacement.

Before getting sidelined, Khaleel featured in five matches, taking only two wickets while conceding 146 runs. Although his economy rate of 8.67 was respectable, his recurring injury concerns could become a significant factor in CSK’s retention decisions.

Major squad decisions could shape CSK’s IPL 2027 plans

Chennai Super Kings are expected to approach IPL 2027 with a clear focus on strengthening their core and improving squad balance. While experienced performers and emerging talents are likely to remain central to the franchise’s plans, several fringe players and underperforming signings could make way for fresh additions.

The management will particularly focus on improving their bowling depth and maximizing value from overseas slots. Releasing expensive players who failed to make a significant impact would provide additional flexibility in the mini-auction and help CSK build a more competitive squad for the upcoming season. With another title challenge firmly on their agenda, the franchise may not hesitate to make some bold calls ahead of IPL 2027.
