Harry Kane believes England’s extensive preparations in the United States mean concerns over the heat at this summer’s World Cup have been overstated.

England captain Kane scored the only goal in Saturday’s 1-0 friendly win over New Zealand, heading home late in the first half to continue a remarkable scoring run that has now seen him net 67 times for club and country this season.

Temperatures reached 33 degrees during the match, with players also having to contend with a difficult playing surface.

However, Kane insists England’s squad are already adapting well to the conditions ahead of their World Cup opener against Croatia on 17 June.

    Kane dismisses heat concerns

The build-up to the tournament has seen plenty of discussion around the weather expected across the United States, but Kane feels England’s training camp in Florida has prepared the squad well.

“To be honest, I don’t think the heat’s been too bad,” Kane said.

“We’ve been working in these conditions every day and after the first few sessions I think most of the lads adapted well.

“Today’s game didn’t feel too difficult in that respect. It’s something that’s been talked about a lot, but maybe more than it needs to be.

“We’re professional athletes and we’ve prepared properly. The players and staff have done everything possible to get us ready.

“We’ve still got more than a week before the first game, so by the time the tournament starts I don’t think it will be an issue.”

Kane arrives at the World Cup after another outstanding campaign and says he is relishing the opportunity to lead England into another major tournament.

The Bayern Munich striker remains one of the most prolific forwards in world football and feels physically as strong as ever.

“Playing for England is my favourite thing to do,” he said.

“I take great pride in wearing the shirt and captaining the team.

“It’s a privilege to lead this group into another World Cup and we’re all excited about what lies ahead.

“There are always expectations when England go to a major tournament, but that’s something we embrace.

“I feel as good as I ever have and I’m looking forward to getting started.”

England have been based in Florida since arriving in the United States on Monday, with head coach Thomas Tuchel using the warm-up matches to assess his options ahead of the tournament.

Tuchel fielded two different line-ups in each half against New Zealand, with another friendly against Costa Rica to come in Orlando on Wednesday.

Kane was aware his involvement would be limited against New Zealand but was pleased to find the net before making way at half-time.

“As a striker you always want to score goals,” he said.

“I knew I’d only be playing 45 minutes, so it was nice to get one before the break.

“But these matches are about more than the result. They’re about building fitness, adjusting to the climate and getting used to the pitches we’ll be playing on.

“It’s another important step in our preparation and now we focus on the next game.”

England begin their World Cup campaign against Croatia in Dallas before completing their group-stage fixtures against Ghana and Panama.
