The iconic lead of Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead trilogy, Bruce Campbell, has doubled down on the fact that he has no plans to return to the franchise as the chainsaw-wielding Ash.
First appearing in the 1981 cult horror classic The Evil Dead, Bruce would then go on to reprise his role in 1987’s Evil Dead II and then in the final entry of the trilogy, Army of Darkness, but his journey as Ash didn’t end there. He would reprise his role one final time in the TV show Ash vs Evil Dead before it was eventually cancelled after three seasons. Following the show’s cancellation, he made it clear that that was the final time he’d ever play the character.
In a recent interview with the Detroit Free Press, he doubled down on this by saying: “We’ve moved away from Sam Raimi, we’ve moved away from Ash and Bruce Campbell.” He added, “They’re Hollywood, they’re studio movies now. They’re not indie movies anymore. And that’s where I found that my use just phased out.”
The Evil Dead franchise returned to feature films in 2013 with Fede Alvarez’s Evil Dead reboot, then in 2023 with Lee Cronin’s Evil Dead Rise, and in 2026, we will see Sébastien Vaniček’s Evil Dead Burn hit cinemas on July 10th. Beyond that, the next instalment in the franchise has already been set out, with Francis Galluppi directing Evil Dead Wrath, hitting cinemas in 2028.
Outside of their Evil Dead trilogy, Campbell and Raimi have, over the years, collaborated on several films, with Bruce cameoing in all of Sam’s Spider-Man films, Oz the Great and Powerful, The Quick and the Dead and many more.
