Australia and Bangladesh were involved in an intense battle in the opening ODI of the three-match series at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka. After being asked to bat first, Bangladesh posted a competitive 284/8 in their allotted 50 overs thanks to valuable contributions from Tanzid Hasan Tamim, captain Najmul Hossain Shanto and a superb unbeaten knock from Mosaddek Hossain.

In reply, Australia found themselves under pressure right from the start after losing Matthew Short on the very first ball of the innings. Bangladesh’s pace attack continued to ask difficult questions, with Nahid Rana generating impressive pace and bounce to keep the visitors on the back foot throughout the chase.

The moment of the match arrived in the 31st over of Australia’s innings when Rana struck again with a hostile short-pitched delivery. Bowling from back of a length, Rana extracted extra bounce from the surface and hurried Liam Scott with sheer pace. Scott attempted a half-hearted cut shot, hoping to keep the ball down, but the delivery climbed sharply and found the outside edge. The ball flew quickly towards the point region, where Tawhid Hridoy showed exceptional reflexes.

Reacting instantly, Hridoy dived forward and completed a magnificent low catch just inches above the ground. The effort required tremendous concentration as the ball was travelling at pace and looked destined to fall short. However, the Bangladesh fielder kept his eyes firmly on the ball and held on brilliantly to send Scott back for 2 off 4 deliveries.

The wicket left Australia reeling at 138/7 in 30.4 overs and further strengthened Bangladesh’s control over the match. Hridoy’s athletic effort immediately sparked wild celebrations among the home players and fans, with the catch quickly becoming one of the standout moments of the contest.

Nahid Rana and Mosaddek Hossain star in Bangladesh’s dominant win

Bangladesh eventually completed a memorable 86-run victory via the DLS method after a thunderstorm interrupted proceedings. It was only their second-ever ODI win against Australia and their first in more than two decades. Earlier, Mosaddek enjoyed a dream return to the national side, smashing an unbeaten 86 off 70 deliveries after being dropped three times during his innings. He also contributed with the ball, claiming two wickets to cap off a superb all-round performance.

Rana finished with outstanding figures of 4/41, removing Josh Inglis, Alex Carey, Scott and Xavier Bartlett. Despite an unbeaten half-century from Cameron Green and a fighting 47 from Carey, Australia never recovered from the early blows inflicted by Taskin Ahmed and Rana. Bangladesh’s bowlers maintained relentless pressure throughout the chase, securing a famous victory and a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series.
