CBS News has undergone a massive overhaul since Bari Weiss was made editor-in-chief. However, recent reports claim that she might soon bring her influence to another company. Insiders recently weighed in on the story, also claiming that another figure could soon become her “counterpart” of sorts.
Bari Weiss Became The Editor-In-Chief For CBS News Last Year
Weiss was installed as the editor-in-chief of CBS News back in October 2025. This followed Paramount Skydance acquiring The Free Press, which she had founded in 2021.
Since Weiss, who had no prior broadcast experience, joined the network, viewers have seen a number of changes occur. In particular, a few figures have left 60 Minutes over the past few weeks.
According to a report from Axios, Weiss could soon bring her influence to another network. Reportedly, she could be tapped to run CNN’s editorial side while other candidates are set up to run its business side.
According to reports, Weiss could oversee all news editorial across both CBS News and CNN pending Paramount Skydance’s deal with Warner Bros. Discovery going through. Her possible counterpart will also manage business operations across both companies.
The Reports Listed A Few Figures Who Have Been Considered As Weiss’ New Counterpart
A few of the names reportedly being considered for Weiss’ counterpart included “NBCUniversal News Group chairman Cesar Conde, CNN Worldwide CEO Mark Thompson and former NBC News president Noah Oppenheim.” Another source shared that Paramount also considered “Ben Sherwood, the Daily Beast‘s CEO and former ABC News president, and David Rhodes, former CBS News president and current Sky News executive chairman.”
Meanwhile, as Paramount awaits regulatory approval to obtain Warner Bros. Discovery, Paramount executives aren’t allowed to converse with any WBD executives. This could include Thompson.
For the time being, sources have also shared different stories on how Paramount currently views Weiss. One source claimed that they are looking to limit her purview concerning linear coverage going forward.
However, another source shared a different story. This insider claimed that Weiss’ position is secure. They shared, “The Paramount brass loves Bari Weiss. She has the full confidence of David Ellison, who believes Bari has done a fantastic job as editor-in-chief. Bari has been involved with identifying people she would partner with on the business side.”
For the time being, federal regulators are expected to approve the merger. However, the merger is still being assessed by several Democratic state attorneys general and European regulators.
