Over the past few weeks, various figures have found themselves being fired from 60 Minutes. Recently, news has come out that one of the show’s producers has quit amid the ongoing overhaul. Details of a memo sent by the producer to their colleagues have also surfaced.
CBS Viewers Have Seen Several Figures Leave 60 Minutes As Of Late, Including Scott Pelley & Sharyn Alfonsi
CBS News has seen several changes occur since the installation of Bari Weiss as editor-in-chief back in October. This took place following the acquisition of her media company, The Free Press. Prior to this, Weiss had no previous broadcast experience.
One program that has especially been impacted by the restructuring is 60 Minutes, which has since lost multiple high-profile figures, from those announcing their own exits to those who saw their contracts go unrenewed by the network. These have included Scott Pelley, Sharyn Alfonsi, Tanya Simon, and Anderson Cooper.
Recently, it was announced that Michael Gavshon, a longtime 60 Minutes producer, is also making his departure from CBS News. Reportedly, Gavshon, who worked out of the network’s London bureau, shared a memo announcing his resignation.
Michael Gavshon Joined 60 Minutes As A Producer In 1992
As shared by The New York Post, the memo read, “Thirty-four of my forty-one years at CBS News have been at 60 Minutes. The old chestnut, I have stood on the shoulders of giants, couldn’t be more true.”
The outlet noted that a Status newsletter reported that Gavshon took issue with a 60 Minutes segment that was subject to unusual editorial feedback back in January. The piece, which was an Anderson Cooper report, was about a White House policy of accepting South African refugees, who were described by President Donald Trump as victims of a white genocide. The segment, which criticized Trump’s claims, eventually aired the following month.
According to reports, Gavshon also took issue with recent firings concerning the program. This included Tanya Simon, Sharyn Alfonsi, Cecilia Vega, and Draggan Mihailovich, among others.
According to his LinkedIn page, Gavshon is a graduate of the University of Cape Town. He first joined CBS News as a producer in 1985. He later took on his producer role for 60 Minutes in June 1992. Gavshon’s exit isn’t going to be immediate, as he is expected to stay on until the end of June.
