With the countdown to the 2027 ICC Men’s ODI World Cup gradually beginning, discussions over India’s potential squad have already gathered momentum. The marquee tournament is expected to usher in a blend of experienced campaigners and emerging stars as the selectors look to build a balanced unit capable of challenging for the title. While several young players are staking their claim, the role of seasoned all-rounders remains a major talking point, particularly given the demands of modern 50-over cricket. Against this backdrop, former India captain Kris Srikkanth has voiced strong support for veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, insisting that the left-hander should not be overlooked for the global event.

Kris Srikkanth backs Ravindra Jadeja for the mega event

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Srikkanth argued that Jadeja still possesses the qualities needed to make a significant impact in ODI cricket and warned against dismissing him prematurely. “Jadeja cannot be written off yet as he’s a brilliant cricketer,” Srikkanth said while assessing India’s all-round options ahead of the tournament.

The former opener also weighed in on the competition for places within the squad, highlighting the emergence of Nitish Kumar Reddy as an exciting prospect. However, he suggested that the return of Hardik Pandya would likely limit opportunities, making it a direct battle between Nitish and other all-rounders for a spot alongside Jadeja.

“Nitish Kumar Reddy is a developing all-rounder. So once Hardik Pandya is back, it’ll be only one of himself and Nitish. The other all-rounder must be Jadeja. But Jadeja also must start performing. Yet, even though he’s not at his peak, it’ll be foolish to write him off,” Srikkanth added.

Jadeja’s experience across conditions, coupled with his fielding excellence and ability to contribute with both bat and ball, has made him a vital asset for India over the years. Srikkanth’s comments underline the belief that proven performers can still play a decisive role on the biggest stage despite increasing competition from younger players.

Expectations high from Team India under Shubman Gill

Expectations surrounding the Indian team are expected to remain high heading into the 2027 ODI World Cup, especially with Shubman Gill leading the side. The team management faces the challenge of blending youth with experience while ensuring stability in key positions.

At the same time, uncertainty continues over whether veteran stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will feature in India’s squad for the tournament. Although no final decision has been made, several cricket experts have argued that the accomplished duo should remain part of the setup because of their experience and ability to perform under pressure. As preparations gather pace, debates over team composition are likely to intensify, with selectors tasked with assembling a squad capable of ending India’s wait for another ODI World Cup triumph.
