    Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) secured their spot in the IPL 2026 playoffs with a thrilling 23-run victory over the Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the 61st match of the tournament at the scenic Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala.

    In a high-stakes, high-altitude clash, RCB posted a formidable total of 222/4 before a disciplined bowling performance restricted PBKS to 199/8. The win sparked wild celebrations among RCB fans as their team officially marched into the knockout stages.

    Choosing to bat first, RCB suffered an early setback when opener Jacob Bethell fell for 11 runs off 7 balls, cleaned up by Harpreet Brar in the third over. However, this brought together the iconic Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal, who quickly shifted the momentum. The duo engineered a rapid 50-run partnership in just 27 deliveries, propelling RCB to a stable position. Padikkal looked dangerous during his 25-ball 45, striking three boundaries and three sixes before becoming Brar’s second victim of the evening, leaving the scorecard at 97/2.

    The true turning point of the innings arrived with the arrival of Venkatesh Iyer. Teaming up with Kohli, Iyer played a blistering, unbeaten knock that took the PBKS bowling attack completely out of the equation. Kohli anchor-accelerated his way to a brilliant 58 off 37 balls, smashing six boundaries and three maximums before falling to Yuzvendra Chahal in the 15th over.

    Following Kohli’s departure, Iyer took full control of the death overs. He reached a rapid half-century off just 29 balls, eventually finishing on a spectacular 73* from 40 deliveries, laced with 8 hits to the fence and 4 towering sixes. A late cameo from Tim David, who blasted 28 off 12 balls at a staggering strike rate of 233.33, added late fireworks. Despite economical spells from Harpreet Brar (2/35) and Azmatullah Omarzai (0/38), PBKS bowlers Lockie Ferguson and Chahal leaked runs heavily, conceding 43 and 42 respectively from their three overs each, allowing RCB to post a massive 222/4.

    Disciplined RCB bowling halts PBKS batting lineup in chase

    Faced with a daunting target of 223, the Punjab Kings run chase got off to a disastrous start. Veteran swing bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar struck twice in the early overs, removing opener Priyansh Arya for a duck in the very first over and sending back wicketkeeper-batter Prabhsimran Singh for just 2 to leave PBKS reeling at 18/2. The slide continued when Shreyas Iyer was dismissed cheaply for 1 run by impact substitute Rasikh Salam, leaving Punjab in a deep hole at 19/3 inside the powerplay.

    Cooper Connolly (37 off 22 balls) and Suryansh Shedge (35 off 22 balls) mounted a temporary recovery, but regular breakthroughs kept RCB in the driver’s seat. Romario Shepherd broke the partnership by removing Connolly, while spinner Suyash Sharma accounted for Shedge. Marcus Stoinis tried to shift the momentum with a fighting 37 off 25 balls, but he was trapped leg-before by Josh Hazlewood just as he threatened to break free.

    Shashank Singh kept Punjab’s faint hopes alive with a sensational, aggressive half-century, smashing 56 runs off just 27 deliveries, including four boundaries and four sixes. However, his dismissal by Rasikh Salam in the penultimate over sealed Punjab’s fate. Salam was the pick of the RCB bowlers, finishing with excellent figures of 3/36, while Bhuvneshwar provided crucial early breakthroughs with his 2/38. Despite a late unbeaten cameo from Brar (5*), PBKS fell comfortably short, finishing their 20 overs on 199/8, ensuring RCB’s safe passage into the IPL 2026 playoffs.
