New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has officially announced the 20-player central contracts list for the 2026-27 season as the Black Caps prepare for a crucial year across formats. The latest contract cycle runs from August 1, 2026, to July 31, 2027, and reflects NZC’s focus on maintaining squad depth while preparing for an extensive international schedule, particularly in Test cricket.

The contract list features a blend of established stars and emerging performers who have impressed for both New Zealand and their domestic teams over the past year. With several important bilateral assignments and ICC events on the horizon, the board has rewarded players who have consistently contributed across formats.

The biggest talking point from the announcement is the return of Devon Conway and Blair Tickner to the central contracts list. Conway rejoins the contracted group after spending the previous two years operating under a casual playing agreement due to his commitments in franchise cricket around the world. Despite not holding a full contract, the left-handed opener remained a regular member of New Zealand’s squads across formats and has now committed his availability for all international fixtures during the upcoming contract cycle.

Meanwhile, Tickner has earned a deserved recall following a series of impressive performances for both Central Stags and New Zealand. The pace bowler enjoyed a strong run across formats and recently claimed his maiden international five-wicket haul against Ireland in a one-off Test match. Speaking about the selections, Black Caps head coach Rob Walter praised both players and highlighted their importance to the national setup.

“Blair has worked extremely hard over the past few years and added new levels to his game. He’s an excellent team man and has stepped into various roles for the side over the past few months and excelled in them,” Walter said.

Devon Conway’s return provides timely boost after Kane Williamson retirement

Conway’s inclusion comes at a significant moment for New Zealand cricket following the recent retirement of former captain Kane Williamson from international cricket. With more than 6,000 international runs and 146 appearances across formats, Conway brings invaluable experience to a side entering a new era.

The latest contracts list also sees Zak Foulkes and Mitch Hay retain their places after receiving their first central contracts last season. Both players have continued their development impressively and featured for New Zealand across all three formats during the last 12 months. Foulkes has already represented the Black Caps in 36 international matches and played a key role in New Zealand’s ODI series victory over England, while wicketkeeper-batter Hay made a memorable Test debut against the West Indies with a half-century in Wellington.

To accommodate the returns of Conway and Tickner, spinner Adithya Ashok and batter Muhammad Abbas have dropped off the central contracts list. NZC also confirmed that Michael Bracewell and Mark Chapman requested not to be ranked in Test cricket and will remain contracted as white-ball specialists. The board is expected to announce its casual playing agreements in the coming weeks, with players such as Finn Allen, Lockie Ferguson and Tim Seifert likely to be among those considered.
