Los Angeles Angels star center fielder Mike Trout said Thursday that he was placed on the 10-day injured list due to a right hamstring strain.

Trout told reporters he sustained the injury while running to first base during the Angels’ 8-1 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday.

Trout, 34, is hoping for a short stay on the IL.

“From last night to today, it’s a night and day difference, so that’s positive for me,” Trout said prior to Thursday’s road game against the Athletics. “I was a little worried last night, but had a plane ride and just sitting down after playing, so that kind of came into effect.

“But feels way better today, so I’m not overly concerned about it, but I’m going to do everything I can, in that training room and the weight room, to get back.”

Trout had played in 74 of 75 games this season prior to the setback. The 11-time All-Star is batting .234 with 17 homers and 36 RBIs and is a candidate to make this season’s All-Star game in Philadelphia, located roughly 45 miles from his hometown of Millville, N.J.

The three-time American League MVP had been able to stay healthy most of the past two seasons after a series of injury-interrupted campaigns.

Trout played in 130 games last season, but he played in more than 82 games just once in the prior four seasons because of an assortment of injuries. He played in 53 games during the COVID-19 shortened 2020 campaign.

Trout has 421 homers, 1,054 RBIs and 221 steals in 1,722 games over 16 seasons with the Angels. He has a career slash line of .291/.406/.566.

Second baseman Christian Moore was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake in a corresponding move. The 23-year-old is batting .333 with nine homers and 45 RBIs in 51 games with the Bees this season.

Last season, Moore batted .198 with seven homers and 16 RBIs in 53 games with the Angels.

Los Angeles also released left-hander Drew Pomeranz and recalled right-hander Ryan Johnson from Double-A Rocket City. Johnson will start Thursday’s game against the Athletics.

Pomeranz, 37, was 0-3 with a 5.01 ERA in 25 games in his 13th big-league season. The Angels were his eighth team. Johnson, 23, went 0-1 with a 15.12 ERA in four appearances (one start) with the Angels earlier this season.

The Angels also added catcher Tyler Heineman to the active roster, one day after acquiring him from the Toronto Blue Jays for cash considerations. Heineman, who turns 35 on Friday, batted .154 with one homer and six RBIs in 31 games with Toronto. Los Angeles is his sixth team.
