Team Canada has won its first game in the history of the FIFA World Cup. On Thursday, Canada trounced Qatar 6-0 at BC Place in Vancouver, British Columbia. To put the Canadian win into perspective, the FIFA World Cup began in 1930, and this was Canada’s first win in 96 years.

With the win, Canada improved to a record of one win and one draw for four points. More importantly, Canada moved into first place in Group B.

The Canadian hero on Thursday was Jonathan David of Ottawa, Ontario. David scored three times for Canada as he scored in the 29th minute, the third minute of extra time in the first half, and the second minute of extra time in the second half. This was David’s third career hat trick for Team Canada. He previously scored thrice in a 7-0 Canada win over Cuba at the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup in Charlotte and in a 4-0 Canada win over Suriname in 2022 World Cup qualification in Chicago.

Two other Canadians scored for Team Canada on Friday. They were Cyle Larin of Brampton, Ontario, and Nathan Saliba of Longueuil, Quebec. Canada’s other goal was an own goal by Qatar.

Canada is actually tied with Switzerland for first place in Group B. However, Canada has the tiebreaker as they are a +6, while Switzerland is a +3. Canada next plays Switzerland on Wednesday in Vancouver.
