Southampton witnessed an absolute cliffhanger as New Zealand Women edged past a resilient Ireland Women by a mere 4 runs in the 13th match of Group 2 at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026. In a night-and-day thriller that kept the crowd on the edge of their seats, the White Ferns successfully defended a modest total, thanks heavily to an exemplary all-round showcase by skipper Amelia Kerr. The narrow victory drastically shakes up the Group 2 standings, keeping New Zealand’s knockout ambitions intensely alive.

Amelia Kerr and Izzy Sharp pushes New Zealand to formidable total

Opting to bat first, New Zealand’s innings began in catastrophic fashion. Ireland’s bowling attack, spearheaded by Orla Prendergast and Aimee Maguire, ripped through the top order, reducing the White Ferns to a precarious 10 for 3 within the first 20 balls. Georgia Plimmer fell for just 4, followed immediately by Isabella Gaze (13) and Maddy Green (2).

Captain Amelia Kerr then took charge, steadying a sinking ship with a crucial, counter-attacking 30 off 24 deliveries, laced with three boundaries. Following Kerr’s dismissal at 48/4, Brooke Halliday anchored one end with a gritty 34 off 37 balls. However, the true momentum shift came from young Izzy Sharp. Sharp injected desperate urgency into the back half of the innings, smashing a brisk 36 off 28 balls, featuring four boundaries.

A late-innings cameo from veteran Suzie Bates (19* off 12 balls) pushed New Zealand to 140/6 at the end of their 20 overs. Cara Murray and Prendergast were the pick of the Irish bowlers, picking up two wickets apiece.

Ireland fall narrowly short as New Zealand defend their total

Chasing 141 for a historic World Cup victory, Ireland’s pursuit started poorly when opener Amy Hunter was cleaned up early by Bree Illing for 23. What followed, however, was a magnificent 110-run partnership between captain Gaby Lewis and Prendergast that completely took the game away from New Zealand for the major part of the second innings.

Both batters brought up magnificent, identical half-centuries under pressure. Prendergast compiled a brilliant 59 off 53 balls, striking five fours and a maximum, while Lewis anchored with a serene 58 off 53 deliveries. At 116/1 in the 18th over, Ireland looked completely on course for a comfortable victory.

Enter Amelia Kerr. With the game slipping away, the Kiwi captain brought herself back into the attack and turned the match on its head. In the space of three deliveries, Kerr removed the dangerous Prendergast and followed it up by dismissing Rebecca Stokell for a duck.

With the pressure mounting, Rosemary Mair dismissed the well-set Gaby Lewis in the subsequent over. Needing to defend a tight margin in the final over, New Zealand’s bowling unit held their nerve perfectly. Jess Kerr and Illing (1 for 18) dried up the boundaries, leaving Louise Little (5*) and Leah Paul (8*) stranded as Ireland finished agonizingly short at 136/4. Kerr ended with match-winning figures of 2 for 23, rightfully earning the Player of the Match honours.
