Today Show hosts come and go, but Al Roker has been there for three decades. He took over as weatherman in 1996 when Willard Scott retired. Al Roker’s lovable personality and quick sense of humor helped fans accept the change. But is it all for the cameras?
One of his former co-workers made the shocking allegation that Al Roker created a toxic work environment during their short time on the show. Billy Bush was on the Today Show for only two months but recently said that Al Roker was a nightmare to work with.
“The way I describe Al is three words: territorial, vindictive and chronically unprepared,” Billy Bush said. The former Access Hollywood host claimed that NBC was ready to let Al Roker go at one point in their tenure together.
Al Roker Scolds Co-Host During Live Broadcast
Al Roker loves to joke around with his co-hosts, especially Craig Melvin. But one jab may have gone too far. Al Roker, Craig Melvin and Dylan Dreyer co-host the show’s third hour. On Tuesday, June 23, the two teamed up against Craig Melvin.
Dylan Dreyer and Al Roker are both meteorologists. During the show, they called out “Weather team assemble!” from the anchor desk. Craig Melvin stood up with them, causing a surprising reaction from Al Roker. “No, you sit down, Melvin,” he said. Dylan Dryer added, “Wait, where are you gonna go?”
Craig Melvin reminded his co-hosts that he used to do the weather on the West Coast. But Al Roker simply responded by telling him again to sit down. Was the exchange playful or proof that the weatherman has another side of his personality that viewers never see?
Craig Melvin Calls Al Roker His Mentor
Craig Melvin joined the Today Show in 2018. He became a permanent co-host of the show’s third hour in 2019. He got another promotion in 2025 when he replaced Hoda Kotb as Savannah Guthrie‘s co-anchor on the show’s first two hours. Despite Al Roker’s constant ribbing, the two are actually good friends.
In a 2020 interview, Craig Melvin called the weatherman his “secret mentor.” The feeling is mutual. Al Roker had rare praise for his co-host in 2019 when Craig Melvin was named in Variety‘s New Power of New York list.

“I’m just going to come right out and say this. I have a man crush on Craig Melvin, and I don’t care who knows it. How can you not love this guy? He’s a young Southerner who was raised by a mom who was a teacher and a dad who worked shifts at the post office in South Carolina,” Al Roker wrote on Instagram at the time.
