The Mariners announced that outfielder Curtis Washington Jr. was outrighted to A-level Everett after clearing waivers. There wasn’t any public indication that Washington had also been designated for assignment when he was optioned back to Everett earlier this week, but the outright now opens up a spot on Seattle’s 40-man roster.
The 26-year-old Washington was briefly part of the Mariners’ active roster when his contract was selected earlier this week. Between a roster crunch and a road trip for the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers, Washington earned a cup of coffee in the majors basically just due to a stroke of luck, as the Mariners quickly needed a backup outfielder and Washington was able to make the short trip from Everett to Seattle.
Washington’s cameo in the Show didn’t result in any playing time, so he is still not officially a big league player. His career resume remains a .221/.311/.330 slash line over 973 plate appearances since being selected in the 19th round of the 2022 draft.
Washington appeared in two games with Triple-A Tacoma in 2024 but has otherwise not played beyond the high-A level. Given this modest resume, it isn’t surprising that other teams didn’t feel the need to spend a 40-man roster spot on a waiver claim, so the Mariners were pretty safe in knowing that they wouldn’t lose Washington by DFA’ing him.
