With Avengers: Doomsday on the horizon, new and returning characters have been announced. We already know that a great number of the OG X-Men cast members will be joining the Avengers in their latest adventure. However, two very noticeable and important characters who have not been chosen are Halle Berry’s Storm and Famke Janssen’s Jean Gray (aka Dark Phoenix).
Unfortunately, there appears to be no hope for last-minute additions as both actors have made it clear to the media that they will not be appearing in the film. Berry herself does not seem to be overly concerned about missing out on what is to come. Janssen, on the other hand, has stated in a recent interview with Nerdtropolis, that Marvel “made a mistake” not bringing her Jean Grey back to the screen in Avengers: Doomsday.
“I am so bad at keeping secrets that I always say to everyone I’m the worst actor in the world. It’s all on my face. You right away will read it. I think they made a mistake, but hey, who am I? I’m just a little me who thinks that.”
Back in November 2025, when talking to Entertainment Weekly, Janssen made it clear that Disney had “never ever” discussed with her the potential of reprising her role for a Marvel Cinematic Universe project.
When asked about her role as Dark Phoenix, Janssen noted the character still has dramatic potential, saying, “Oh, yes. I am ready. I am ready to show you some Phoenix, some very dark Phoenix.”
Having last appeared in X-Men: Days of Future Past in 2014, Janssen is rumoured to be appearing in the Tom Holland-led MCU movie Spider-Man: Brand New Day, due for release this July.
Still, even if that doesn’t come to pass, we’re assured of a multitude of Marvel characters fighting for supremacy in Avengers: Doomsday. It’s currently scheduled for release on December 18th – coincidentally, the same release date as Denis Villeneuve‘s Dune: Part III. Will a certain movie blink first and accept a new release date? Only time will tell.
