Among the album’s most meaningful moments is a collaboration with daughter Lourdes Leon, which Madonna now says became something far bigger than music.

For Madonna, “Confessions II” wasn’t born from a desire to simply make another dance record. Instead, the singer found herself drawing inspiration from an emotionally turbulent period in her personal life.
During a recent conversation with Interview Magazine, the Queen of Pop revealed that the project was heavily influenced by major losses within her family.
“I had a lot of stuff going on in my life personally. My brother was very, very, very ill, and my stepmother, with whom I’d had a very traumatic relationship throughout my entire childhood, had just died,” she explained.
Rather than avoid those feelings, Madonna used songwriting as an outlet. She revealed, “It’s hard for me to write a song about nothing. I have to tell a story.”
That storytelling led her to explore years of family trauma before eventually blending those emotions into the dance-driven sound fans know her for.
Madonna Says Writing With Lourdes Changed Their Relationship
One of the most surprising revelations from the interview involved Madonna’s eldest daughter, Lourdes Leon.
While the mother-daughter duo has collaborated before, Madonna revealed that a song they wrote together carried deeper emotional significance.
“The song I wrote with my daughter, Lola. She approached me about writing a song together as a way to heal our relationship,” she shared.
The 67-year-old described the experience as a turning point, noting, “It was a really important moment, and it solidified the idea that now is the time to make this record.”
Reflecting on the timing of everything, she connected Lourdes’ approach to a series of major family events unfolding around her.
“Well, all these symbolic things happened. My step-mother died, my brother was ill, my brother died, my daughter approached me… you know what I mean?” Madonna stated.
For the star, the album ultimately became a way to release emotions she had been carrying for years.
Madonna And Lourdes Have Spoken About Their Differences Before
Madonna’s revelation may have surprised some fans, but both she and Lourdes have previously acknowledged challenges in their relationship.
In a 2021 interview with Interview Magazine, Lourdes spoke candidly about growing up with one of the most famous mothers in the world, describing it as having “extreme privilege.”
She explained that Madonna strongly encouraged independence. “I think my mom saw all these other kids of famous people, and she was like, ‘My kids are not going to be like this,’” Lourdes revealed.
Lourdes also admitted she worked hard to establish herself outside of her mother’s shadow. The 29-year-old described Madonna as a control freak and noted that she knew she had become completely independent after graduating high school.
Despite those comments, the pair have remained close professionally and personally.
Madonna Reflected On The Loss Of Her Brother Christopher Ciccone
The new album’s emotional foundation was also shaped by the death of Madonna’s brother, Christopher Ciccone.
Following his passing in 2024 after a battle with cancer, the “Material Girl” singer shared a deeply personal tribute on social media.
“My brother Christopher is gone. He was the closest human to me for so long,” Madonna posted. She described a bond that was formed through their shared experiences growing up.
She said, “It’s hard to explain our bond. But it grew out of an understanding that we were different and society was going to give us a hard time for not following the status quo.”
Dance became one of the strongest connections between them, with Madonna describing it as the “superglue that held us together.”
Away from their sibling relationship, Ciccone played an important role in Madonna’s career, working as her backup dancer, dresser, and art director before their relationship eventually unraveled.
Madonna’s Relationship With Ciccone Was Marked By Love And Conflict
While Madonna and her brother shared years of closeness, their relationship later became one of the most public family feuds in the entertainment industry.
As Ciccone devoted more of his life to supporting Madonna’s career, tensions reportedly began to build.

“I guess I always thought that one day you’d see my worth and behave accordingly… but you never did… a little f***ing respect was all I ever wanted from you and you couldn’t even manage that,” Ciccone added per the Daily Mail.
