Heatwave to ease from Thursday, far-right leader accuses PM of “manoeuvring to steal upcoming elections”, US court rules out asset freezes against Spanish national team, and more news from Spain on Thursday 25th June.

    Heatwave to ease from Thursday

The heatwave currently scorching Spain began to subside on Wednesday evening and will continue to ease from Thursday when temperatures will fall in the west of the peninsula, according to Rubén del Campo, spokesperson for Spain’s state meteorological agency, Aemet.

He notes that the heat will persist across much of the country but from Thursday a widespread drop in temperatures will begin in the western and central areas of the country, and more gradually in the northeast, the Mediterranean coast and the Balearic Islands.

Looking ahead to next week, temperatures may rise again, forecasts show, with intense heat returning to parts of the northeast, centre and south of the peninsula, as well as the Balearic Islands.

Vox leader Abascal accuses PM of “manoeuvring to steal upcoming elections”

The leader of Spain’s far-right party Vox has accused the scandal-ridden Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, of “manoeuvring to steal the upcoming elections”.

“The Prime Minister is trying to rig another verdict – the final one – the one that Spaniards will deliver at the ballot box when their voice is returned to them,” said Vox leader Santiago Abascal on Wednesday in Congress.

Sánchez, in response, accused Abascal of “electoral flat-earthism” for his allegations.

Against the backdrop of a fiery debate about the concurrent corruption cases surrounding Sánchez’s governing Socialists, Abascal, the leader of Spain’s third-largest party, warned that Spain will be “putting its freedom, democracy and the rule of law on the line” in the forthcoming general election, something opposition parties have demanded Sánchez call early but are not scheduled until mid-2027.

US court rules out asset freezes against Spanish national team

The Spanish national football team, currently in the United States competing in the 2026 World Cup, has avoided potential asset seizures sought by an American investment fund as compensation for cuts to renewable energy made by the Spanish government during the Zapatero and Rajoy governments.

A US court has ruled that Blasket fund cannot seize assets belonging to companies linked to the national team, which is a legal entity “distinct from the Spanish state”.

District of Columbia District Court Judge John D. Bates has acknowledged that Blasket may seek attachable assets linked to Spain, but emphasised that “both the Spanish Football Federation and the national team are separate legal entities and there is insufficient evidence to suggest that they are an ‘alter ego’ of the state”.

Fire that forced evacuation of Madrid’s Torre Moeve extinguished with no injuries

Madrid fire services confirmed that the fire which broke out on the 25th floor of the Torre Moeve, and which led to the evacuation of the building, has been extinguished, according to government sources.

The fire broke out at around 5.00 pm on Tuesday following a reported fire.

Two workers were treated for minor smoke inhalation and a passer-by suffering from an anxiety attack, all of whom were discharged at the scene without needing to be taken to hospital. The plume of smoke caused by the fire in the building was visible from various points across the capital.
