Focus Features has dropped a first-look image for Robert Eggers’ upcoming horror film Werwulf.
The next film from the American director follows a village in medieval Britain who are haunted by a mysterious creature that lurks around the area as legends come to life in the form of a supernatural threat. The film stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson in the seemingly shapeshifting role, as Lily-Rose Depp, Willem Dafoe and Ralph Ineson join his side. All four were in Eggers’ previous outing, his Nosferatu remake, with Dafoe and Ineson frequent collaborators of his.
The film is penned by Eggers and co-writer Sjón, with both producing alongside Tim Bevan, Garett Bird, and Eric Fellner.
In a recent interview with Esquire, Eggers gave some vital details about the film. Speaking on Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s character, he said: “He’s a farmer. He’s a man who is cursed. It’s a story about a man who is cursed and is trying to find salvation through love. He’s a character who is haunted and in great pain.” He added that no character in the film has a name, except for a dog.
When talking about the look of the film, Eggers said they shot on 35mm, with black-and-white grain incorporated into colour film to achieve a unique look. The film’s dialogue is set in Middle English, with Robert saying they worked with two Oxford professors to perfect it. He finished off by saying that all the sets were built from the ground up in the British countryside.
Werwulf is Eggers’ fifth feature film, the others including The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman and the previously mentioned Nosferatu remake. After this film, he has plans to direct a Labyrinth sequel, as well as a reimagining of A Christmas Carol.
Werwulf will release in US cinemas on 25th December, and in UK cinemas on 1st January 2027.
